Love Dave Gonzales and the Paladins. I like their newer rockablly stuff, but the old jump blues cd's are still my favorites. Saw them open for Los Lobos many years ago, had no idea who they were at the time and have been a huge fan ever since. Wish they got to the Philadelphia area more.

This makes me wonder a little about where Jim Heath gets inspiration for the guitar tones on his records. Sound similar to you guys??? I love that fat P-90 and big-reverb sound.

That Guild 350 he plays with the Frantz P-90's is a tone monster. Guild put out a Paladin model at one time. Very $$$ and apparently they did not make many. Superb looking guitar...lots of flame on the back and neck. Dave Gonzales gets the baddest, fattest, killer P-90 tone. Nowadays he seems to favor Teles.

YesSIR that's a mighty tone!
There's a lot of current live Dave in this thread from Summer NAMM. 9th post down has audio of a good long live set.

Listening to Proteus' recorded set, especially track 9, reminded me of this video, f-ing brilliant song. If we had anything resembling a music scene, or radio left, this would have surely been a hit.

Dave Gonzales has literally reinvented baritone guitar. He wasn't any slouch on a Duo Jet either... I still miss the days of him wailing on that Guild however.

I have a bunch of CDs I've tossed up onto Ebay, including a nice vintage Paladins one titled: Years Since Yesterday. (By the way it was co-produced by Steve Berlin of Blasters and Los Lobos fame)

so after seeing this clip, i've been reading some interviews with dave and he said that for the longest time in the early paladins years, he was using a fender bassman 4x10 and an old echoplex. to me, the amp in this video looks too small to be a 4x10 bassman but that sure looks like an echoplex next to the amp. what i'm getting at is that it sounds like dave just has the reverb juiced on his amp... i don't hear echo, slapback etc.
he sounds great though... the other videos from that session are killer too.

Bosstweed, I've always know Dave to be a reverb junkie, but he used to carry an EP3 echoplex too. The box next to the amp doesn't look like any kind of echoplex I know, I guess he's getting his reverb from that.
The amp looks a little small to be a Bassman indeed - but I do know he used to own an old bassman that was recovered in black tolex, and reportedly had belonged to Hollywood Fats. That amp eventually went to Teddy Morgan, and now belongs to my good Buddy Mischa from Amsterdam Alt.Roots band T-99

When I saw the Paladins live in a small club quite a few years ago, I'm pretty sure that Dave Gonzales was playing through a Fender Super Reverb. And yes, he's not shy about turning up the reverb or throwing in a nice deep vibrato.

I've watched that video so many times today, it's great, it's actually inspired me to pick up the guitar and learn. I've been listening to too much punk, stuff I hear and think "Pah, I can play that". But this has really put some fire in me to learn how to play, In the last hour I've covered more ground on the way to being able to fingerpick then I ever have before.

great! I'm glad you got inspired! I started out playing punk too, and for so many years I listened to rockabilly and other americana styles and just thought, "I can't do that why even try?" but you know what? I don't care if I never get good at this stuff, I'm having a helluva time trying.

Punk and garage rock n roll is my first love, it's where I get to front, be the song and dance man. But when no one's looking I dream of being a rockabilly picker, with the biggest damn guitar any of you have seen, bigger than both Walter's Guilds together!

40 bucks?! wow. thats crazy. there are 4 albums available on itunes. el matador let's buzz years since yesterday and power shake - live in holland
and if you find you really love the paladins, then you owe it to yourself to check out dave's other band the Hacienda Bros. if you don't like the itunes thing it looks like cduniverse has some stuff http://www.cduniverse.com/sresult.asp?HT_Search=xartist&HT_Search_Info=Paladin... including Power shake live in holland DVD. I wasn't aware of that, I might have to grab it.
