These shows were recorded in the late '50s. Beautifully shot in color, it's not the Grand Ole Opry, but the giants of country music are all here, to be sure. The Carter Family is introduced in this clip by Carl Smith, who was married to June Carter at the time.

Thanks, sroux. I love all those things. Every once in awhile you'll see some show where a group lays down those tight harmonies, and it always sends a chill up my spine. Love that stuff. And it's the only way I'm allowed to sing--in a group.
That guitar player, on the other hand--you won't ever find another one of those.
That's Chet's CA "Solid Body" with the bridge pickup removed and a piece of plastic covering the hole--He's playing that guitar on a couple of tunes on the "Webb Pierce-Chet Atkins" video (Mine's a VHS, probably a DVD by now) on the Shanachie label.

The pickup was probably in a vise on his workbench or inoperable. He had tried crushing the magnets with pliers to try to lessen the magnetic affect on the strings. Those films were shot over a period of days and he used at least three different guitars in them. The one we see here, his legendary "red top" 6120 (reissued as the CGP) and a certain mahogany stained 6120 no doubt a precursor to the 6122
