jukka, I just got a chance to listen to your "Freight Train". very good. I feel that you're going to do very well with this style of "pickin'". good job.

Sounds great.
I used to play Freddy King style, and now I can't keep my thumb out of the melody, which creates big problems keeping the thump going.

I can Travis pick a little. I don't really care for Atkins style instrumentals but used to listen to a lot of old blues stuff by Mississippi John Hurt and some others and I got my picking down from that. It frees you somewhat because you don't have to worry so much about the full melody, just little backing fills and figures, much like in rockabilly.
What worked for me was to get the alternating bass locked first. Then pinching the treble string notes on the beat. Then I worked on the hammer-ons for the half notes and so on. It took a while but it all came together. The key for me was to start with the minimum and then add to it.

well done jukka...
I too have spent most of this last year learning similar picking styles. I always end up trying to lazy it out or play it too fast and get something close but no cigar...
Great Guitar sounds cool.

Thank you for your comments, they are really pushing me to learn more. I'll try to post some more videos when I have learned something new. I already started practising little bit the "I am a Pilgrim" tune. I found a good lesson from youtube by Pat Kirtley.

I'll See You in My Dreams, such a great song. I could not keep my fingers out of it, when I finally had some time to play a guitar for a while
I bought some thumb picks (they only had one of a kind) and used a file to shorten it a bit. But I don't feel comfortable with it (atleast not yet) so I played this without. I also seem to loose those picks easily so I have to go and buy some more.

Jukka. I thought the clips were great. Are you just using the amp's revderb on the first clip or is that a delay. And if so, which one? It sounds perfect.

Rockfish, actually I am not using amp at all. I was too lazy to set it up with microphones etc. so I used Line6 Guitar Port USB audio interface, which has a software simulation of amps and effects. On those clips the effect is a simulated short tape delay. I think they have done pretty good job mimicing some of the amps and effects. Although you cannot beat the real thing in live situation, but for recordings like this they are fine.

The guy in 'riff one' does our Mr Atkins a great disservice calling what he's doing "Chet Atkins Style"
HE may call it that but no one else would. That is more like what is (wrongly) called 'Travis Picking' but what used to be called 'pattern picking' (a more sensible name) in the folk music era of the sixties.Valid technique. Pompous naming.
Sorry. Had to get that off my chest on behalf of self and thousands of others who know what Chet Atkins style sounds like and what is required to approach it.

What will really help you is tabbing the first song you did, then posting it.
Well that would help me more, but it will help you, too !

Let's see if I'm able to insert a picture here. It is just the two first chords A&D, if it makes any sense I can try to add more.

The picture appeared to be too blurred. Let's try a link instead
It seems to clip part of the picture. But the image file can be found here http://www.netikka.net/jk/RIFFTAB.JPG
I made this with Powertab editor, which shows the notes as well. Most propably the time values are not absolutely correct.

Very nice, I've been taking lessons for Travis picking for a couple of months, but I'm not near as far a long as you! I'm working on "Freight Train", "Nine Pound Hammer", and Cannonball Rag right now. I've been playing since 1965 otherwise...

Man, you've certainly come a long way in a short time! One thing that's helped me,is using standard (?) chord forms with my thumb over the neck instead of Barre chords. There's lots of stuff that requires you to raise the first finger while holding the chord and it can't be done using a Barre. I have small hands, and it's tough, but it's coming along. I also recommend Thom Bresh's "The real Merle Travis guitar." Another very good one is "Mel Bay presents the Merle Travis style." It includes a CD, and is done by Merle's cousin, Tommy Flint. This will take you from the most basic form to some pretty advanced stuff. You're doing a great job! regards, JimL

I'm glad to see this thread revived. Jukka, you are really coming along very nicely. You may be developing a whole new style/sound here with the Travis/Atkins/Reed tunes in more of a rockabilly fingerstyle. It sounds good and that Great Gretsch sound comes through like gangbusters. I just got a new guitar and I'm already lusting for another - a 6120 w/dynas.
Like the man said, "you'll be rockin' and a rollin' soon."
Richard
