I'm rarely at a loss for words.
Unbelievable.
Wow, I have to agree. That was really beautiful. I love that song regardless, but the man has 'atmostpheric' pretty much all sewn up. The rest of you can go home.
That was pretty damn amazing. 'Atmospheric' is a good description.
One of his strings is slightly off pitch though and it bugs the hell outta me. Not saying he can do much about it, but it sucks.
I always liked his stuff with Chris Isaak, but his solo record is really great. He really adds something cool to the instrumental R&R genre as far as tones, arrangements and songwriting. Pretty tasty stuff.
I'm still just stunned. I've listened to it about 5 times now. That's got to be on of the most moving pieces of instrumental music I've heard in a long, long time.
Too bad he's playing on those bóóóring stratocasters. To this day I can't understand people prefering to play (and especially this kind of stuff) on those ... when you can play on a hollowbody with bigsby. But that's a different topic I guess.
Nevertheless, a great song, I liked the vibratobar playing, got a little too goody-two-shoes dreamy at times, + hum and tremolo, but it is really easy on the ears. Good stuff.
I think Jimmy Wilsey is fantastic. Any time someone brings up how bad guitar sounds were in the 80's, I mention his wonderful, tasteful playing and tone with Silvertone, Chris Isaak's band.
I don't think you could really play what he plays on a big hollowbody with a Bigsby, and I think he probably got into strats because Hank Marvin is one of his big idols. (something he never made a secret of)
He posts quite a bit on the TDPRI (telecaster forum), and is a very funny, pretty approachable guy.
Hi! folks, does anybody know what brand he uses for delay effect?
Quote from Jimmy Wilsey:
There is just enough wood in a Gretsch to start a Les Paul fire.
Ha!
Jimmy loves him some Fenders, and the sound is unbelievable live, incredible tone and the timing is impeccable how he is able to just strangle and suck everything out of every note. Self proclaimed King of Slow, and I agree.
treblebooster, he uses one of the purple analog maxon pedals.

Just as we revere "that great Gretsch sound," an out-of-phase Strat, pickup selector in the second position, is truly something beautiful to behold. Listen to alot of Chris Isaak's recordings and you hear that sound. Prime example is the solo from Wicked Game. You may have grown weary of hearing that song, but the tone on that solo is impeccable.
What is that old saying about having the right tool for the right job? It clearly applies to electric guitar playing as well.
And from aesthetics as well; here's this guy up there in a black cowboy suit, with a cowboy hat. But, he's playing a silver sparkle strat. The juxtaposition works. The Gretsch would be too obvious. Although, I bet he could just make some Dyna's scream and cry.
I like that one Chris Isaak song, super magic 2000, this instrumental piece. Groovy, surfy, easy on the ears just like superstar. My sister is a big time Chris Isaak fan, so I heard all of his songs. That one's my favourite though.
I don't know, stratocasters are not my thing. I don't think the sound is all that great, e.g.the Peppers' Under the Bridge. A great song somewhat ruined by that typical strat sound. It's so dry and dull. Wilsey's strat sounds amazing though, that I'll admit.
There are not too many strat players I'm fond of. Can only think of Hendrix, Dick Dale, SRV, Jerry Cantrell.
Most guitarplayers I don't like play strats or tele's. Like that guy from Modern Talking , 80's galore (check more of their stuff if you want a good laugh)
or all these strat players on youtube , playing the same blues pentatonic tricks. Dull, dead, boring. There's a fairly big correlation between music I find unexciting being played on strats. People with a custom strat are not exactly my guitar heroes.
And I feel silly playing on such a small bodied solid, as I'm around 6"10 (2,06m). It looks like a toy guitar on me. I don't dislike music just because it is played on stratocasters. I find it dull unexciting, then find out yet it was played by yet another guy on yet another strat.
Maybe it's inherent to mainstream. Maybe it's because everybody keeps hyping Fender and their blackfaced amps, while there's equally good or better equipment out there.
But don't take it too seriously, it's only rock and roll.
tidalwave_sideburns said: I like that one Chris Isaak song, super magic 2000That's a more recent song, and it's Herschel Yatovich on the guitar there. Incidentally, it's also a strat
Here's another guy who uses a strat and a whammy bar fairly well . . .
Jopapa, thanks for the great clip.
I am not a big Jeff Beck fan but he certainly did an outstanding job on my all time favorite blues tune.
Yeah, that Beck clip was awesome!
Glad you like it. I suspect that the cameraman was a guitar player because there's alot more closeups of what Beck's doing w/ his right hand than your typical TV shoot. Enjoy the long weekend boys. Keep practicing.
Peppers Under the Bridge? Isn't that a Jaguar on that track? Or is it just in the video?
Nice instrumental! Thanks for posting that.
I think it's a Jag. Frusciente is a big Jag guy.
Jaguar eh? Hmmm, then I'm talking out of my ass, :) I'm prejudiced and poorly informed regarding Fender guitars, oh well so be it, my loss. I could have swearn I saw that Frusciante guy playing strats (and a white falcon? ). I'm not that much of a gearfreak though.
I do like this Wisley. Not too much of him on the tube. Mostly bad recordings. There's this instrumental version of wicked game. Very recognizable tone. You're a good guitarplayer when people recognize you by that one b-note.
Dang. That guy really knows how to use a trem.
Bonedaddy, I had a Jag like that years ago. Loved the guitar, loved the tone, etc., hated the bridge. Sold the guitar. Now, taking a look at yours, I'm starting to regret it.
K
Tidalwave,
He played a Jag for a while, then mostly a strat on the last Chilipeppers album/tour. But I think he jumps around a lot...
How many of you remember Jimmy as the bass player in a Punk band called the Avengers? They were a great band. BTW, Jimmy's a really nice guy. BZ
Not me, I was just a little whippersnapper when Jimmy was tearing it up on bass. However, when I kinda stopped playing guitar for a while when I was concentrating on college/career back in the early 90's...hearing Jimmy Wilsey on tracks like "Blue Hotel" and "Wicked Game" is what made me pick up the guitar again.
