Those are really cool. The sound coming out of a Harley's exhaust is the sweetest mechanical music this side of a flathead Ford V8 with Smitty mufflers.
ROCKERS hey? Ace Cafe? Chelsea Bridge? La Rocks? Lovely to see that, there were many great bands around then picking up on the rockers scene. I used to go to the Tiger Lounge run my Rocky Rhythm of the Revillos in the mid 80's. He had a band (recently reformed) called the Roadholders.
I recently went to Lloyd Johnson's exhibition, he's an old pal and it was great to catch up with other old farts from that scene.
Let me know more Tonyb, I loved the videos and the guitar sound, dunno how I missed ya first time round!
A big-up from Vince Ray! wow, that really means something. I've always loved your work Vince, right up my street. I've always fancied a Vince Ray designed tatoo & it's my birthday in June.
The Deadbeats started when singer Suzy May left Tallahassie FLA to seek fame & fortune in London. Me & the bassist came to London from the nottingham punk scene & after a few drummers settled with Mark Robertson ex meteors. We were a pretty hot band on the 80s London rockabilly scene, played with the stray cats a few times but were cursed with bad luck. We were signed to Blackhill management (Peter Jenner, ex pink floyd manager & organiser for those great Hyde park concerts) who were handling Ian Drury at the time & I thought I'd made it. However they went bust after a couple of months. Then Robbo at Stiff records agreed to put our album out & a month later they were taken over by Island records & it was all forgotten. Oh well we still had a great time.
Good God man, I'm from Nottingham too! Left 30 years ago but I still call it home. We lived in a small town called Arnold. I used to hang around the Imperial and Sandpiper in the 70's watching bands like Gaffa and Some Chicken (we covered New Religion on the last album and I got to meet up with the drummer). Guess you were around then or am I showing my age!
We're playing Nottingham next week too, at the Angel for Kreepers club
I liked the video 'cos the sounds reminded me of a few bands that are around now so I guess you were ahead of your time!
Crikey Vince, we were probably on the M1 at the same time, I moved to London in '79. I was in a band that had a residency at the Imperial & was always at the Sandpiper. I knew the bassist from Some Chicken, big guy who's dad owned a metal fabrication works, he did some security bars for me & Gaffa, the singer/bassist was a funny guy & that thug of a drummer, hah. I don't get up to Notts much, my only surviving family member (brother) is in HMP Wakefield Maximum security. I went to Derby art college & art & music has been my life (I actually got a paid job doing a logo for a mate the other week) I spent most of the 80s hanging round Dingwalls (did anyone actually pay to get in) I bet you Know Lal Hardy & Dennis Cockell. I can't believe we have never run into each other & I'm serious about the tatoo design. Did you have a shop on Manette st for a while, near break for the border?
Hope folks don't mind us having a trip down memory lane here Tony! What was the name of the band you played in at the Imperial? I had my first pint there and also remember a guy passing me what I thought was a cigarette. Why would he do that I wondered??? I loved Some Chicken and have recently been working on a possible live release of a recording from the Imperial of their single launch. Dunno if it'll ever happen, the label is dragging their heels. The singer (Ivor Badcock!) is sadly no longer with is. Gaffa played a reunion gig last year which I missed but there's footage on youtube and Wayne's banter is as funny as ever. Mick Barratt...the thug on the drums was the only member missing due to work I think.
I'd be happy to draw up a tattoo for you, send me a PM and we'll get it sorted. And yep, I do know Lal quite well and also Denis Cockell and have tattoos from them both. Denis is still around although he's a 'man of mystery'. He did a lot of Brian Setzers first tattoos of course, we talked about that when I got tattooed by him in the 80's in Walkers Court.
I don't have the Manette St shop any more but I'm often in that area as we rehearse in Denmark street (my drummer owns the 12 Bar) We'll play the bar early June during the Queens jubilee weekend.
And Derby hey? Evil little town! Dunno why but Notts and Derby seemed to be violent places when I was a kid.
Let me know about the tatt ideas, maybe send me a PM before everybody else reading this chat falls asleep!
A promo video my old band the Deadbeats did in '85. Nice Gretsch bass & a young me on a Harmony Meteor.

I have no wish to contradict the Bear but it's a Triumph, just like Marlon in "The Wild One"

Really great stuff! The sound, the look, the girl! "Fall In Love Tonight" - is that a cover? My aging, addled brain knows it from somewhere...
Pretty awesome!
Thanks jlj, all original songs. There is some psychobilly band doing a cover of "crazy when I hear that beat" on youtube.
I enjoyed the ride.
Thanks, with a smile.

That was some really fantastic stuff Tony.
