One of my favorites has always been Curly Chalker. Love his tone and his hands and fingers did fly.

Alright, just having lost a good 45 minutes channel-surfing from steel vid to steel vid.
I love steel, pedal or non-. Gotta get me an 8-string lap and really work on slants. My style is pretty simplistic, not that I've mined it for all its potential, but I've avoided learning slants.
Pedals, man, I dunno. LOT of stuff to keep track of; I don't know if I have musical brain enough to calculate all the permutations. Plus, I can't imagine the tuning and tweaking obsession.
Not that it's a good steel vid, but this clip seems to beg for wider exposure...

I love Buddy Emmons! If you haven't heard it, you should check out Steel Guitar Jazz from 1963. His solo on "Four Wheel Drive" is out of this world!
Now, this one isn't pedal steel, but if it doesn't make your jaw drop, I don't know what will!

Boy these proxy errors are really getting to be annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, hopefully I can recompose what I just lost.
I watched all of those vids and they are all great. I used to never miss the Mickey Mouse Club. #1 reason - Annette Funicello.
But somehow I missed the little girl singing and playing the steel. That was precious.
One of the most awesome steel players alive today, in my opinion, is Paul Franklin. Ronny Light introduced me to him at the Cheesecake Factory in Nashville when I was there visiting a couple of months ago. That night when we were backstage at the Opry, Paul was part of the Opry band. Everytime he would take a ride on the steel the hair would stand up on the back of my neck. I've never heard anything like it in my life. I was and still am unable to adequately describe his playing. There are several vids of him on the net; but nothing that does him justice. Maybe someone can find something of a recent nature that would more adequately showcase his unique talent. He really is something special.

Proteus, as long as you're "polishing" while you're "surfing", that's cool

Sorry, I couldn't resist

Here's one of Curley Chalker (he was Hank Thomson's steel player for a long time) and "Thumbs" Carlisle. Curley is one of my favorite steel players.

Deed, thanks for chiming in. I was hoping you would. You really came up with a legendary list.
I have never tried to play steel; but I have always been a big fan of the steel guitar. I have attended a couple of the steel guitar jamborees in Fort Worth. Apparently, the one in St. Louis is the biggy. I'd like to go to that sometime.
I want to post this one of Paul Franklin; along with Mark O'Connor, Brent Mason and others. I was hoping to find a better one because there is much more to Paul Franklin than lightning speed.

Audiodrome, if you liked that clip, you should listen to the Hellecasters a bit. They get that same almost frantic Tele sound and also pass the leads around between the three of them. This was definitely good stuff!

I love the Hellecasters! Duke Levine is a local hero around these parts. He played with Mary Chapin Carpenter for years and I've used him on a couple of commercial sessions at my studio. The other guitarist, Kevin Barry, played with Paula Cole.

Wow. I didn't know there was any Mark O'Connor videos out there. I've been in awe of him since the early '80s. Amazing talent. Seems to be pretty much done with Nashville, now.
On topic, Sneaky Pete was cool with the Flying Burrito Brothers.

Ok, if this isn't in the top five steel solos of all time, I don't know what is. They just gave the last half of the record over to John Hughey because it's just that good. And I won't stop cryin' for another ten minutes.
"Lost in the Feelin"... Conway with John Hughey on steel
Also, that's Ricky Skaggs on mandolin and harmony. About 1980-ish

Up on those ultra high frets, Mr. Hughey was probably more accurate than anyone ever. His intonation was always perfect.

Thing about those steels... you can hit a note, go to lunch and come back and the note is sitll going...
I booked a local group "The California Cowboys" at this saloon I ran for a while. Came in and noticed that their regular steel man was missing. I listened to the 'new guy' and it was one of those things where you knenw there was a guy a cut above your regular saloon bandsman. Joe Goldmark was his name... has a good reputation and several CD's although I haven't found any good YouTubes of him. :You play requests?" I asked him. "If I know it" he said. "Play your favorite song" said I...
He played 'Sleepwalk'.
Brought down the house...

Hokay, here's my pick for this listing...
This guy's (Dave Harley) Orange Blossom Special is beautifully done... he uses echo in a way that would have made Chet proud and it's unnerving to see him pick up the steel altogether yet still hear what's being done purely with pedals, levers and right hand...

I like pedal steel, but prefer non-pedal steel myself. I have a couple of good non-pedal steel vids, but that's not what you asked for, so...
I want that guys shirt in the very first video!

Shoot em' out there Wenzel- Speedy West wasn't playing a Pedal Steel in the first video either. Neither was Curly Chalker in my video or the anonymous girl in Proteus' video.
