If they were "lip syncing" it anyway, why did'nt he use a Teisco or Harmony or something? sad...

I think it needed a neck reset anyway. Did you see how easily it came loose?

Hi! folks, Townsend is one of my personal heroes, but for some reason it always hurts me seeing him smashing guitars.
That rebellious act could have a sense in the 60's conservative context(even if it started by accident and next was used as a way to attract attention). I mean, when Pete did this in the beginning he did although he couldn't afford it, but in the 70's context it looks more like some rockstar self indulgence.
In those days a 59 Gretsch wasn't as "sacred" has it has become now, just a second-hand instrument to be used(and in this case abused).
Myself, I could never break any guitar, even a cheap one.

same here treblebooster. He is my all time hero but breaking guitars has never been my thing. And you are right about the rebellious 60's act. I can dig that but in this video I think it might be a drugged up self indulgence act.
Talking about drugged up: I always love to see Keith Moon playing and enjoying himself behind the drum kit too. What an animal.

When I was a kid I thought that it looked cool, but seeing Pete doing that to that guitar in particular is like watching someone take a razor to the Mona Lisa.

Every time I see Pete smash something, I have to think of John Hiatt's "Perfectly Good Guitar"!

I like the way these guys smash things up. You could always forward to 5:40 if the music isn't to your taste.

Ha ha yes Dangerousman, 'these studio's are haunted by the Who'. I like the way the other band members are looking at what the hell he is doing with that drum kit. Nice seeing the Damned again, so long ago.

In an article he was pissed that they had to shorten the tune for TV and didn't think that he was playing the guitar that Walsh had given him. When it hit the ground he realized what he had done and had the guitar restored. I guess it's like viewing child porn, you must forget you're doing it after awhile?

Iit is pretty 'funny' that he forgot that he was playing that guitar. But I understand being pissed at TV execs telling you what to do with your song. And if you are used to smashing a guitar under angry circumstances then you are apt to do it again.... I wonder what Joe Walsh thought when he heard that. Actually I wonder what Joe Walsh was thinking giving him a guitar in the first place...

Idiot
I must add that I've enjoyed Pete's playing, but never did get the smashing up guitars thing.
I look at it like "spousal abuse". I guess I had to work too hard to get my guitars, and I sure wouldn't beat the hell out of them, or my babe

Never liked Pete when I saw him smash his first guitar! Never liked him since. Could never understand destroying something that people worked so hard for.

Now here's the killing Joke:
Have a guitar that Pete or Cobain have destroyed?
It just may be worth a small fortune.
Someone actually kept tabs on what, where and when he smashed:
I see that he had one other Gretsch that he played onstage. He didn't destroy this one.

As a teeneger, I got a kick out of Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice's quote on newspaper tabloid in the "Who Do We Think We Are" album: "I bought it and I'll bloody well boot it!"
'Course it depends on what's getting the boot. Pete trashed a maple neck '50's strat at Monterrey. I'd have been happy just to get the leftovers.

I can NEVER forgive PT for that kind of crap! If he ever sets foot in my front yard (not likely), I'll pimp-slap him within a half inch of his life! And that's a THREAT! Think of all those underprivileged people in the Third World that would never have a chance at a '59 6120...

I've always thought the guy was a complete dick. O.k songs from the very early period but, still....a dick.
Proud to say that none of my money has ever helped Townshend's career.

That photo of him with all the broken Rickenbackers on the wall behind him just makes me sick!
At least he still has that 6120 and as far as i know he didn't break anymore Gretsches.
