Yeah, at one time I thought I wanted to be a guitar maker, it's just so much easier to have a real job, those 2 guitars took me a year to make. The lacquer job alone took a month. Plus, all the building was starting to ruin my hands for guitar playing, and I live to play gigs, so now it's strictly part time, and mostly for myself. Here's another project in the making.

That Guild burst is truly sick. How does it sound?"
It sounds really nice to my ears. Very warm and smokey. The pickups are wound for more of a jazz tone then rock. Suits me fine. I have other guitars for rock. It has the lowest action of any of my guitars. Ridiculously low with no buzzes.

Beautiful guitars. I've always wondered how those big soundholes affected the sound. Does it make for an open tone with lots of presence?
D'Aquisto's guitars have fascinated me since I first became aware of them in the mid '70s. I used to look at the covers of Jim Hall's records and salivate at the sight of his D'Aquistos. Back in '77 I could have (barely) afforded one but I never went through with it. I sure wish that I had. They were only about $1,500 made to order back then. Joe Pass let me play his once, it was pretty impressive.

Hey Mark, D'Aquisto was the cat with all the old school D'Angelico experience, plus he really departed from the traditional and sought out a more modern way of interpreting the archtop. The soundholes are a little different sounding, but the archtop guitar can be steered in many directions. Top thickness, arch height, bracing styles(X or parallel or even a single brace like Stromberg did) species of wood etc. can all have an effect on the outcome. Generally if you had to nail me down on the DAquisto style sound holes(Actually they were used many years before on some German guitars)I might say they add some volume and possibly add to a different vibration pattern of the top, and a slightly new and different tone, that seems to clarify complex chord voicings.

Here are the kids - not pictured is my MIM Strat (which never gets played) and my Americana Way Out West (which I have never seen - it is waiting at my parents place in the states). I suffer from GAS from time to time, but with the hot rod and the tele I stay pretty satisfied.

What's that thing on top of the Marshall?
Is it a bit of that Champ project you were talking about?

Tsar, yup. It's my Champ kit, just loaded with an EL34 instead of a 6V6 (should make for a good counterpart to the 5222). I assembled it the weekend before last and turned it on last Friday only to have it whine like a beast. So I swapped some wires and the whine is gone but it's too quiet. The guitar can't come through. Something's horribly wrong with it and once I figure it out I'll post a thread with pictures of its guts and all that. It's my first (probably last) kit so the wiring is a bit messy. Especially when compared to someone like Guitarfarm's. The wiring on his amps almost call out for no cover so the world could see it.
But I'm excited to get it working and hear it.

I've heard the Falcon and the sax live and they both sound pretty darn good to my ear. BTW, Bob uses an Ampeg, a very Protean move if you ask me. If I could build my dream band I'd find a good bass player and have Bob as the other guitarist in the band. He's versatile and blows a mean saxophone. -
