Modern Gretsch Guitars

Guitar shops in California

1

Hello everyone,

I will be in California (San Francisco and Los Angeles) next summer and wanted to know if there is some Gretsch friendly shops ? Thanks and merry Christmas :)

2

i don't know of any shops that'll give you the kind of divers selection you'd get from our sponsors, but Guitar Showcase in San Jose is a Gretsch stockist with a broad selection of major brands from $200 Squiers to custom shop Les Pauls. worth a visit just to see their vintage guitar showroom/exhibit which includes about 100 rare guitars.

Real Guitars @ 15 Lafayette near Mission and Van Ness has a lot of Vintage gear...curious place.

Guitar Solo on Townsend near the CalTrain Station is more Acoustic, with many finer Instruments.

When you are in LA, a must see shop is Truetone Music on Santa Monica Blvd. They always have plenty of Gretsch guitars, new, used and vintage on hand and it's just a very cool shop in general. In general, Truetone has a great selection pretty much of everything: Gretsch, Gibson, Fender, Guild, you name it plus acoustics, amps, and every pedal you can imagine plus there's always a chance you could run into a celebrity there. The other real nice thing is, the staff are very nice, laid back and helpful.

5

Guitar Center on Sunset in Hollywood and Sam Ash across the street. Both have great selections of Gretsch. Also for vintage you must go to the vintage room at GC. Pricy but a great museum if you will.

Gretschadelphia’s Truetone suggestion is spot on. Best guitar shop in So Cal that I’ve been to.

6

Bananas At Large in San Rafael (1654 2nd St.) just north of SF in Marin County usually has a number of Gretsches, both new and used, in stock. You can often see notable Bay Area musicians there too, if your timing is good. Neal Schon has been there several times when I've gone in, as well as David Freiberg of Quicksilver and Jefferson Starship

7

If you are into acoustics, McCabe's in Santa Monica is a must.

8

Yep, TrueTone is a must-see location, and not far away (over the hill in the San Fernando Valley) is Norman's Rare Guitars in Tarzana, another fun place.

Strongly recommend Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto (about 45 mins. south of S.F.) Stock is about 70% acoustic to 30% electric and is geared to higher end instruments, vintage and modern.

More than strongly recommend Schoenberg Guitars, a small, quaint shop in the town of Tiburon (north of S.F. in Marin Co.). You won't find a finer shop, and Eric is an extremely knowledgeable and friendly proprietor who also has his own line of acoustics. Stock is 90% weighted to higher end acoustics (vintage and modern) as well as an assortment banjos, mandolins and resonator guitars.

How did I forget to mention Caveman Vintage Music? Whatever you do don't pass this place up. It's actually in the East LA area. Not quite but around that vicinity.

Wow, 20 guitars there I'd love to try just for fun.

Scorpio, yeah and he has a great selection of amps. I mean the shop does. I say “he” because I’ve known the shop owner for sometime and I just think of the store in terms of the owner. He’s a very nice guy.

If you get this far North, Tall Toad Music in Petaluma has a reasonable Gretsch selection and lots of cool vintage stuff too.
