Decisions, decisions: Calling all Country Club owners

  1. After years of wanting, I'm about to pull the trigger on my first proline. I've had a Country Club in my sights all this time, but now that a purchase is imminent, I can't decide which model---the Caddie Green with Filters or Bamboo Yellow with Dynas.

I have to play both of course, and here in So Cal I'll probably make the hour drive to GC on Sunset in LA to do that because I haven't found a store in or near Orange County that stocks both models, let alone one. Fear not, however, I am not giving GC my hard earned $$. I've already spoken with Rocky at Street Sounds and I plan to buy it from him based on all the positive feedback among this group.

He has a GREAT deal on a BY CC that was hung on the wall during Gretsch Day as a demo but is otherwise brand new (if it's still there).

Onto the question: Any advice on either model? I have a 5120, which makes me lean to the green CC with Filters to get that true great Gretsch sound I've always wanted. I like single coils too, but I could always mod my 5120 with GFS Surf 90s for a relatively inexpensive single-coil fix.

Also, the BY model has controls similar to my 5120 while the green CC has the additional tone switch. Any preference on which is a better set up? I like the ability to go from twangy/surfy to warm/jazzy but mostly I keep them wide open with the tone switch in the middle position. I play rockabilly, alternative rock, surf, jazz and blues....just not very well.

I'm not trying to revive the great Filter vs. Dyna debate, just curious to hear what Club owners love most about their gits. Thanks!

  2. Look for a Caddy Green with Dynas...

  3. Didn't even know that was an option. 8-o

  4. Aye, the Caddy Green with Dynas would be what I would have suggested. I really dislike Filters with a passion, though, so I'm biased. Clubs rule!

  5. I love mine - natural with Dynas. Try what you can...

  6. Caddy green with Dynas. Even if that wasn't one of your options, I would've suggested it.

  7. oooooh I love the shop on sunset... I am in San Diego County so I get that way sometimes...the vintage room is a candy store huh?

  8. i may have one of mine up for grabs if youre interested...PM me.

  9. I have a Caddy Green with Filters and it is one fantastic guitar. You won't go wrong with one.

I wouldn't let "tone knob vs. tone switch" dictate which model to get. As a tone-wide-open player, it doesn't really matter which device you use, as you'll arrive at the destination with either. Having the knob won't make you finicky about subtle tone colorings.

You really must listen to the Filters and Dynas, because that's the difference that will matter.

Full disclosure: I like both Filters and Dynas, and really want a Dyna-equipped Club. But I'm a left-handed player, and Gretsch has not (yet) offered a lefty Dyna Club.

  10. If you're in Los Angeles, check out TrueTone in Santa Monica. They usually have more Gretsch guitars in stock than Guitar Center.

  11. Thanks everyone, what a great problem to have. And thanks BuddyHollywood, I will call TrueTone to see what they have in stock. I've heard you and others mention them and it sounds so much better than GC.

  12. i may have one of mine up for grabs if youre interested...PM me.

  13. There's also Sam Ash across the street from GC. Last time I was up there, there were more new Gretsches there.

...but the vintage room had a '55 6120...

I have a CG CC w/ filters. Love it to death. Can't go wrong.

Like the others, I suggest playing 2 guitars with each pick up config and go from there.

  14. I also have a Green CC with filters GREAT guitar.

  15. Although I think you'd be better off at TrueTone, if you do go to GC Hollywood, make sure you look in the Platinum room, which is off to the right as you walk in (it's not always easy to see in that particular store. They'll have their nicer Gretsches in there in addition to whatever's on the wall on the left side of the store. You might call them first as I don't recall seeing any Clubs in there last time I was there. But even if they don't, if you're making a drive, it's a fun place to see, especially the Vintage room.

TrueTone will treat you right. And you never know who you'll see there. I went in Saturday before last to get a couple of speaker cables, and there was a guy sitting talking to Ken the owner and trying out a Fender acoustic guitar (go figure). I thought to myself, as I looked at him and he looked back at me with a "whaddya lookin' at?" expression on his face, "he looks familiar...oh yeah, that's Jackson Browne."

  16. If you decide you want Dynas and really love the Caddy Green, I'd recommend you give Rocky at Streetsounds and Joel at Shanghai a call.

  17. Proteus makes a darn good case for the CC w/ dynas here: http://www.youtube.com/watc...

  18. Proteus makes a pretty good case for anything I've ever seen in his hands.

  19. I'd get a Black one.....

  20. I'd recommend you PM Mustafa. He has some great CCs. I've dealt with him in the past and he's great.

  21. Turns out Hermitt made a great suggestion. After looking at the StreetSounds site for the caddie green Club, I stumbled upon a mint 2011 6136 black Falcon with Dynas and gave Rocky a call. Resistance was futile. Pulled the trigger and it's all mine. This is going to be the longest week of my life.

All it needs is a V-cut Bigsby and a TruArc, but I'll probably spend a few weeks bonding with it as is.

  22. Cool, looking forward to seeing the pictures when it arrives.
