Could Have Stopped With Two

1

I have bought and sold a LOT of guitars. I am not a collector, but enjoy buying, playing different types and styles of guitars. It has been my good fortune to be able to indulge myself somewhat with this hobby. A few of my guitars will get weeded out this year but overall I am very happy with what is in the stable right now.

This got me thinking about my two Gretsch's (see pic). If push came to shove the Dyna's and Filter's would cover every kind of music I play. I really think they are that versatile. What I am saying is I would never sell my Gretsch's period.

After soooo many guits I have come to the conclusion that if I had to...I could have stopped at two, my 6120's. But then there is that crazy old thing called GAS>

Anyone else have one or two (any brand) or three guitars that they could/would not part with?

Yeah, I've got one or two brands I wouldn't part with.

I've got an American Strat, which my wife got me for Christmas about 5 years ago....that would, at this point in time, be the one guitar, out of a dozen (some 30+ years in my posession), that would be the last to go should I ever be in a position to have to get rid of them.

'Course, my only Gretsch at this time is my G5120 with TV Classics (which happens to be the only guitar getting any play time at this point ;-) ) and there is a pro-line in my near future....so, ask me again in about a month.... :P

I have three guitars I will never part with.

The first is my highly modified Ibanez AFS75T. I've never owned a guitar that played or sounded better.

The second is my Dean Tradition D24 acoustic dreadnought that was purchased as a Christmas gift for me by my wife. Besides the sentimental value, it is one incredible playing and sounding guitar.

The third is my recent Dana'Sonic that my daughter bought me for Christmas last year. Again there is the sentimental value, but it is the only guitar with humbuckers I have ever loved the sound of and the playability is top notch.

In reality, all eight of my guitars cover every sonic need that I have and would hate to get rid of any of them. I'm not really GASing for anything.

...but a custom made 6120N - fully hollow with DeArmond 2000s. ;-)

I won't part with My new g5120 (love how it sounds and plays and it will always be my first Gretsch), My '67 Silvertone (my first electric when I was a kid), and my Alvarez Yairi acoustic (my first new, quality acoustic 23 years ago). The rest are just kind of "visitors" stoppong by for a while. When I look at them now I see a Gretsch waiting to take its place

Shit, at one point I had three Pearl Jets. All the same model. I only have two of the three at the moment lol. I hate to say the models I own. You really only need one but what's the fun in that? Lol Currently I've been playing only one Gretsch even though I own several. My main Gretsch is my Steven Stern Black Pearl Silver Penquin (..a mouthful lol). Has been since the day I finally received it. I thought being buried with guitars was retarded but I'm seriously considering it with this one..

Current #1 "85 Strat body with "67 Tele neck. Best feeling and sounding Fender I've ever played.

Al Kooper?! Do tell the story.

15

I have a pair of Gretches and a pair of Guilds that I'll never part with.

16

Could have stopped, but why? Each does something a little different . . .

17

Yep, me too. I think..... 8-o I don't know... I still want a Ric 12, but I couldn't bear to part with either of my 2 Gretschies.

18

If I lost everything else, you might find me sleeping in the back of an old Chevy in some alley, with my arms around the neck of my 6120. Might be a great marketing picture and idea for Gretsch - "The one thing he couldn't part with."

19

If I could keep two they would be my BST branded by Fred Gretsch and My G5191BK.

20

I think these 2 will outlast ME ! ;-)

21

It seems that I have found my limit (or not). It's a six.

VG Stratocaster - everyone should have one Strat and Tele. And a 12-string acoustic.

Les Paul w/ '57 Classic pickups - everyone should have a Les Paul

Epiphone Hummingbird - everyone should have one 6-string acoustic

Gibson ES-355 w/Varitone and Maestro - Just classic.

Gretsch White Falcon w/ TV Jones Classic pickups - Beautiful and classic.

Gretsch Country Gentleman - Beatles, Elvis, Chet... zero fret... I think I don't have to tell anything else.

Then would you mind putting me in your will, please?! :D

23

My Martin 00-18 custom would be the number one.

24

It is addicting, I bought my first Gretsch 6 years ago and since then have owned 18. This is my current lineup.

"Al Kooper?! Do tell the story."

OK, here's the story, but it really doesn't belong in this thread. In 1981 I was playing in a band "The Blame" in Austin, TX. We had a production deal with the "Brovsky Group" ; a production company that also had Christopher Cross, Joe Ely and others.

We were getting free studio time at "Pecan Street Studios" and a monthly pay check just to rehearse. We were playing regularly at "The Continental Club". "Club Foot", "Steam Boat Springs", "The Roam In" and other happening Austin Clubs sharing bills with "Joe Ely", Stevie Ray Vaughan", "Omar and the Howlers" and others.

The company hired Al Cooper to produce some demos of us and to help develop the band. He ended up joining us (on 2nd guitar) for a few months. He loved me and we hit it off great. He kept bugging me to get a Strat although he loved the sound I was getting out of my Hamer Sunburst.

But Al wouldn't let up, so we went down to "Ray Henning's Heart Of Texas Music" and picked out this "71 Strat. I still use it. AND "The Blame" with my good friend Bill Carter still exists in Austin. (Bill Carter is the writer of Stevie Vaughan's "Crossfire" and "Willie The Wimp". Also The Fab Thunderbirds' "Why Get Up" and many other tunes recorded by other artists. That's part of the story.
