CAAS '08: Paul Yandell & Friends play the stereo 6120CGP

The introduction of this new closed-top stereo 6120 continued through Saturday, with many players stopping by the booth for their chance to play it. I think it's safe to say this guitar was the instrumental star of the show.

TV did a little last-minute tweaking on the guitar Saturday morning.

Paul Yandell, whose shoulder injury prevented him from playing on Thursday during the rollout, treated us to a couple of tunes on the guitar Saturday.

He sounded great!

And now, for an entirely different approach, the amazing Tim Thompson,

who happened to wander by. Bobby Gibson, a friend of Tim's, collared him and encouraged him to play the new stereo guitar. Tim was carrying a GORGEOUS acoustic in its case (he insisted I open it and check it out, and I should have taken pictures) and looked skeptical and even a bit dismissive of the whole stereo concept.

Not unlike many of us at first, huh.

But, clearly not wanting to be rude, he submitted to sit down and play. It's safe to say he imMEDiately heard a whole funky orchestra of potential in the orange beast. If the Chet-pickin' hasn't grabbed you yet, you wanna hear this.

Great job Proteus. I should have had the Edirol standing instead of lying flat. Sorry about that. The stereo is nicely captured though.

Is not that last photo of TV an outstanding capture of the master at work? Tremendous. And I'm glad we caught Richard on the bench for a few minutes.

Never owned a stereo guitar but have been behind the concept forever. I would like to hear a binaural recording with a stereo guitar plugged into two complimentary amps. I think it's the only way to duplicate in a recording what we actually hear.

EDIT: When I said complimentary, which is what I wanted to say but the two amps would probably be very diverse....

Semi off-topic...Tim Thompson apparently wrote the theme song to "Walker, Texas Ranger". All references to Conan O'Brien omitted. And Chuck Norris, for that matter.

Well, I hope y'all won't lay my poor playing off on the new CGP. It really is a wonderful guitar; but it takes a little time to get used to a new instrument. Really something to see two pros at work in different fields. Paul Yandell on guitar and Tom Jones (TV) on the repair end.

Tim Thompson sounded really good. He is a great player. We have met a couple of times and jammed together. He is a good dude.

Has the Bigsby handle been removed from the CGP? I don't see it in these pics. And 10-4 on what Bear said about Richard, as well as all the other players, makes me want to burn mine. By the way Richard, what kind of thumb pick do youu like?

re: handle Looks like it came with a fixed mounting bracket and some people can't abide them. They do require personalization for some folks so they probably opted to take it off for the show...

I think I was the only one that complained about the handle. It really was in the wrong place; but anyway they removed it for demonstration purposes. Like Norm said, they require "personalization."

Mr. Brown, I prefer the Fred Kelly light slick pick for finger picking on the electric and nylon string. I use the Fred Kelly heavy speed pick when I play the acoustic.

Bear and farmerbrown, thank you for the very kind remarks. My playing hasn't come back up to par yet since I had the TIA a couple of months ago; but it is getting better. I still love to play.

Bobby's Back!

No one sounds quite like Bobby (http://www.bobbygibson.com/). His rich tone, sure touch, and jazz inflection make his accent unique in the Chetpickin' universe.

Bobby's got a past. You want roots? Here's Bobby on the seminal LA-area country TV show Town Hall Party circa 1958, playing with rockabilly pioneer Bob Luman: Bobby's first Gretsch; Bobby on Town Hall Party encore.

How cool is that – from bona fide certified roots of rockabilly to master fingerstylist in 50 easy years. In that time, Bobby shared with me that he's played all kinds of music, and been a hot picker playin' fast and makin' noise.

Now, he says, he just wants to play pretty music. I understand that. When you hear "pretty music" played Bobby's way, it sounds like a pretty noble ambition.

Bobby's doing a store-appearance tour with Fred and Joe – you ought to catch him if you can. In the meantime, he watched over the CGP during its appearances at the Gretsch display during CAAS.

CGP Mystery Players

Players were passing the CGP around like the most popular girl at the dance on Saturday afternoon. I had the recorder on the floor capturing the proceedings, but there was so much going on I couldn't take notes on just who played when.

So it is that I can't tell you who's playing on my last two audio tracks of CAAS performances. I think it's a different player on each track – and I'm pretty sure they're players already represented in the two CGP threads.

If the guilty parties would like to come forward and take credit, I'll be happy to post the correct information.

If not, I'm satisfied to leave it a mystery, and let the CGP speak for itself.
