Ive been looking at this one for last couple of weeks and I have convinced myself it would be a nice guitar to own.... Now if my dog would not have urinated on my king size bed yesterday causing us to have to purchase a new mattress i would have came out ahead this month and could have had about half the money for something like this....
anyone have a 6119-1959??

I wonder why you need a pickup switch on that annie
Anyway, I always loved the look of the that single pickup tennie... But well, having only one pickup and all scares me off
(noob talking here ^^ )

I really like the 6119-1959. It's simplicity is what I find appealing. Not too long ago Musicians Friend was selling a Power Tenny version of this for a very reasonable price.

I had one briefly.
Super sound from the TV Jones and trestle bracing. Now I want a Power Tenny.
I needed money so sold it.
The switch is the mud switch, which was very effective on this guitar, especially with mondo distortion blasting.
It IS a very cool and unique guitar, that actually works great. I just don't get enough calls for that specific nature of work all night to justify having it in my stable tying up that amount of money (and I hate switching guitars onstage).
But I could sure justify the Power Tenny now, having heard the roar the TV Jones is capable of. Serious singing from this guitar, and at high volumes the feedback is utterly controllable and can be called up at will by just turning a bit in reference to the amp.
Happily, I can cover the same ground with my Heritage H575 and Tech 21 rig, which is much cheaper (but not Gretsch).
I miss it. It is unique and satisfies my Rock star pretentions totally. It's a rock machine. Totally DUDE!

I still don't quite get the appeal of a single pickup guitar. There seem to be so many more possibilities with Setzer Signature sporting a set of TV Jones' fore and aft. This is not to say that the Power Tenny isn't a visually stunning guitar
.
To each his own.

Welp, in some venues, I've found myself on the back pickup all night.
There's something appealing to me about a minimalistic, purpose built guitar. Ya gotta admit, they're unconfusing!
The Les Paul Junior brought a lot to the party IMHO. So did the Esquire, and any number of single pu jazz boxes I've had.
I agree: sometimes versatility is the game.
But sometimes having only one bridge pickup forces me to think outside the box and exploit all that I can from it. That has been educational. The range is wider than I would have ever suspected until I was forced to look for versatility in other ways than my usual pickup combinations.
It can be a pure thing. Also a statement sometimes like, "See, I don' need no steenking selector switches (I can make the simplest ax sound horrible)!"

IMO, much of the magic of the great Gretsch sound comes from the two pu setting. I have a Power Tenny and its an amazing sounding guitar. You may want to try to find a used Power Tenny or you could always get a Setzer or upgrade a 6120 w/ Powertrons (you won't have the trestle bracing however).

I've got a 6118T-125 with Powertrons and really enjoy those pickups.
Contrary to what's been posted here, I think the Powertron/ML Bracing combination in the 125th makes for a far more mellow sounding guitar than my Trestle Braced SSUGR. Of the two, the Setzer is the fire breathing monster and that was a major surprise
. They are certainly different and I enjoy them both.

This rings true to me. On most of my Gretsches the two-pu setting is a safe default and I end up using it a lot.
I understand the visual charm of the single pickup instrument but I can't think of any serious advantage to having only one pickup. If it were a solid-wood guitar with light bracing I might be able to be convinced that having only one pickup would make a difference but on a laminate guitar with trestle bracing I would think not.

Yup, I like both pickups too - the bridge volume turned down just a bit, and Mud Switch either in the middle or down. It's a nice living room sound. So is just playing the Neck pickup.
I'd miss all that with a guitar that only had one pickup which was in the bridge position. The Power Tenny is probably great for some stage situations though.

I think the '59 is impossibly cool. I'd buy one at the drop of the hat if I thought I needed it.

Need it? I never knew that could be part of the decision wether or not to buy? I don't need any of the guitars I have but that never stopped me buying too many.... A 1959 Tennie could very well be the next on my list. I really love the one pick up in the right place... And it is red.
I have this new thing: any guitar I buy now has to be red or green...

It's cooler than it is functional. I think that's all there is too it, if you want a tough looking gretsch, then this is the one. If you want class, subtle variations on tone, subdued styling which "will handle everything jazz to... bla bla bla bla bla bla bla" Just go buy a country club.
But ask yourself, at the end of the day... When the need arose, which one would Brando play?

The 1959 6119 is awesome. Its the Gretsch answer to the Fender Esquire. Simple, loud and proud to be sure. Perhaps one of the most underrated vintage Gretsches out there. The new version keeps pace with the original very well... plays even better.

If I wanted a "minimal" approach on a GreTsch, controls wise, I would get a Black Phoenix.
Two pups, one volume control, and a pup selector.
That being said, I really do like the "standard" GreTsch control set up with the mud and pup switch, individual pup volumes, and the master volume.
Seems like I always end up with the neck pup volume turned down "just a hair". I get a "rich" chime with this setting, the bridge pup WOT, and both pups "on".
If I wanted a "minimal" guitar, I grab my old Tele

I guess it's obvious that I don't have the liking, or extra money, for a "one pupper" in my stable.
Nice, but not my cup of tea.

Amen! I've only played a Phoenix once and it was pretty impressive. The Setzer Hot Rods also impress me a lot. In both cases, the guitar has a stripped down control set but does pretty much everything I could ask of it. -

may i ask why a power tenny is getting a back seat to a bed? if i had to chose between my power tenny and my bed, id happily sleep on the cold hard ground for the rest of my life.
it should be a general rule: Gretsch > bed.

The 6119-1959 never stood out to me until I saw one at Cream City in Milwaukee. Very stunning in person. Then I played it. Very nice guitar.
