I'm hoping someone can help me with this, I just purchased a left handed, (yahoo!) 5420 and want to change out the pups with TV Jones "Classics". What mounting do I order? Thanks in advance for the help.
The screw that is usually a wood screw for standard Filtertron mounting, is a machine screw on the 54xx's.
That long machine screw goes through the pup, and screws into a baseplate. The other three screws on the metal surround have springs that are used to adjust the pup angle.
Thanks for the replies. I haven't gotten the 5420 yet, but I thought I would be pro-active as, I love to tinker with my guitars and I'm not a big fan of ceramic pups.
Also, anyone know the fretboard radius, I'd like to get a different bridge?
Thanks also for the welcome Paul, us lefty's gotta stick together
Don't quote me 100%, but I imagine it's a 12" radius like the 5120/5122. I would be surprised if they changed that.
One thing I've learned about Gretsch, is don't go swapping things out without giving them a chance. I've done it a few times, and wound up back where I started. Wait for the guitar, and give those pickups a shot before you spend the dough for TVs. Don't get me wrong, I love TV pups, just saying give the Blacktops a chance.
Ripley,
Thanks for the good advice, not only will I take it, but I'll be happy to, for once, not spend time and $$$ trying to make it "better" than it is. Though I do think the Tru-Arc or Compton bridge is a good and functional upgrade.
hi guys ive got tv jones classics with humbucker english mount will they fit 5420 thx

Not without custom rings - the HB rings are smaller footprint than the Blacktop filters' rings and won't cover the holes. I'd give the Blacktops a chance before assuming they need to be changed out; just raising the polepieces close to the strings really livens them up!

The standard NE (no ears) should work.

Should be a straight forward swap.
Didn't you like the "blacktop" Filters??
"Didn't you like the "blacktop" Filters?? "
My question as well as I have a cadillac green one coming from MF.
Welcome to the GDP, fellow lefty!
I think the Blacktop Filters are very likable. But TV Jones Classics are lovable.

Patrick, I put a brass Tru-Arc on mine. Love it, and it took care of the "rattles" coming from the bridge.
I'm betting that a Stainless would sound good too, but this guitar is special, and I wanted the brass so it would match the gold better.
I never liked any humbucker until I heard a Gretsch ceramic Filter'Tron. I put a set into the guitar I built.
