we're hoping for some MP3s,I should have listened a little closer... I used a mic, SM58 and took a line from the board but there seems to be a grounding problem because I'm hearing a scratchy artifact every now and then. I will still post it but I'm disappointed.
Fred was using a vintage Tweed Deluxe.
Without spending $3000 for one, where can I get an amp with a comparable sound? I don't know how many watts that thing was, but it broke up at the volumes we were playing at and it sounded like power amp breakup, not preamp tube overdrive. Any ideas? Can I build one? That was a really great tone. I wonder if I can get my blues deluxe to drive the output tubes like that if I crank it to 12? Mine's 40-45 watts, his sounded like maybe 20 if that?

Good stuff fellas. Glad to see Spud was comfortable.
Is that your DSW, Crow?
Are there any DVD's out there that help you play lead guitar in a jam setting, because I think I need one...Other than a few songs that I knew, my improv was sucking today, any tips or anything? I'm really lacking in the rockabilly dept.
Oh well, it was still fun. I just get frustrated with myself.
It was really nice meeting the people I hadn't met and seeing some old familiar faces once again!
Quick, late night post ...
Wow ... pictures are posted already ...
Needless to say, it was fun meeting everyone ...
crowbone - KUDOS ...Thanks for all of your efforts! ...The venue and the BBQ were excellent ...
Paul, Spud - Thanks ... It was fun!
Chris - You sounded great ... I'm really glad that my shabby (Blues Jr. powered) playing was not heard above the Big Boy Amp Mix ...
Ha ... Later friends ...
I would like to nominate Wenzel for the "Coolest Shirt I've seen in a LOOONNNGG Time" Award. (that's saying something too, as I have seen a lot of cool shirts) I had a blast my two boys Billy III(9yrs) and Aidan(3) had a great time as well, tho Aidan was telling anyone who would listen that he would rather be bowling. Little Billy was impressed with Freds protoge (particularly his BIG head of hair) but thought he was a fine player as well. I was impressed with everybody, because frankly no matter what your level of playing skills or your comfort in front of stangers it takes a lot of balls to go for it in that type of setting. So Kudos to everyone.
I wish I could have stayed longer but I was lucky to get there at all.
So who is going to give the full Blow By Blow? I need to know who won what exactly who was who and of course I am wondering how someone as good looking as me has not shown up in a single picture as of yet
Looking forward to endless hours of discussion of this fine event.
Hey Chris, you sounded great, BTW playing in those situations has more to do with comfort level, IE just "going for it" than how many scales, or licks you have in the bag. I play the same 12 notes as anyone else, I certainly play as many, if not more clams as everyone else, but it does not bother me one bit, as I am just out to have fun. So get loose, that is the best advice. Like my son said when he was going up to play drums, "But Dad, I don't know what songs they are going to play" I said "relax boy, its rock and roll. Just count to four and rest will just happen"

In my duties as emcee, I must've been outside while you actually played guitar. Damn! You were actually born onstage, weren't you?

Just a note to say that It was a fun time. I am sorry I could not come on time or stay the entire time I had some family commitments.
I was impressed by the playing abilities and the guitars WOW. some really cool ones there. btw how do you opeated that triple pickup with the 5 knobs 3 swtiches and varitone?????
If it happens again I would love to be there. thanks for the invite John!!!
alpep: ...how do you opeated that triple pickup with the 5 knobs 3 swtiches and varitone?????
You need to get your license from the Operating Engineers Union!
The Guitars:
Our little roundup yesterday would have put most guitar shows to shame.
I took a sampling of my Gretsches: the 63 Annie conversion, and the New Jet, Rics, my '68 tele, and a Supro. Nothing pristine, or museum quality, but Good to Great players all.
Wenzel had his heavily modded Country Club and his Setzer 6120 along with a couple lap steels, which were featured most noticeably on "Sleepwalk".
Nice Playing Chris!
57 Chet had his...um...57 Chets. A pair of scary beautiful 57s in roundup and 6120 form. I got to play the roundup and oh boy! When I think I sound good, I know it's the guitar I'm playing. This baby snarled at every turn and it was in superb shape with the near perfect cowboy case. Yee-Haw!
When I say that Frequent Flyer had his usual assortment with him, do not take it for granted. He packs an arsenal of fine guitars which includes the Annie(not sure of the year) which he seemed to be favoring yesterday, and a (was that a) Tennessean. On the rack was also the prize G-Love Corvette that Paul won in Nashville. I didn't get a chance to play it yesterday though. Did any one else?
BigA had his sweet Elliot Easton with him. Something really appealing about that guitar, amazing.
Jimmy D brought three guitars with him.
A 55 Silver Jet which was in good shape, a little binding rot, but it sounded huge. We did a bit of A/B with Curt's friend's new Silver Jet, and found that the 55 was quite a bit heavier, which makes us wonder why Billy zooms is so light, when this one is not? Quality Control I suppose.
A 64 Tennesean, nearly mint. that I sold him. It was too nice for me, and I knew he'd take care of it.
A 58 Country Gent that he bought from Gas Money. It was good to see the old guitars being taken care of so well, and the all sounded great.
Speaking of Gas Money, Fred had quite the collection with him as well, as I think most of the mid to late 50s were represented in total, Fred also had the new G6120-CGP sitting against the couch!
Curt had his Awesome Country Club, Falcon, and Red Sparkle Electromatic out and about. That CC really fleshes out the Neil Young, and the Falcon...wow. Also, that Jazzmaster was really nice....and had that new guitar smell!
Billy D Light had, at first sight, seemed like a Lonnie Mack flying V. Right. What's that doing here? But upon closer inspection, this V had Dynas in it, hence, it comes to the show! Billy also had his ground up restored, and custom flamed painted Double Annie. How cool was that? Anybody got pics of that? Too bad you couldn't stick around longer Billy.
Roadjunkie had his Spectrasonic, the Bass he won down in Nashville, and the 6120DSW which sounded great, as usual.
Alpep had a guitar that never came out of the case, and everyone is still wondering about it. Pics Al? C'mon, don't be a tease!
Thanks:
I want to say thanks to Proteus for being so generous with the donation of one of your Tru-Arc bridges as a door prize, Won by Roadjunkie, as you know, he LOVES these bridges.
I also want to send out thanks to Gas Money for getting cds and T shirts to the remainder of the roundup.
Please know that your contributions made this little jam even more special.
Roland, the house boss, said it was a fine day and was glad that everything went off without a hitch, and if we ever want to do this again, it'd be a pleasure to have us.
I just think he wants more BBQ!
To the fellows who contributed funds to cover costs, a Huge thank you. Every bit helps, and you helped out tremendously.
Finally, I really want to thank everyone who came out.
Without you, many of us would still be playing in our bedrooms, basements, or garages.
Some of us have working bands, some are too busy to do so, for some, this is the only place to play with others.
It is because of you that we are able to do things like this, and i hope we can continue to do so.
Thanks for being you.
Is that too Hallmark?
Close.
But seriously, this is one more example of what goes on around this place, and what makes folks want to hang around to see what's going to happen next. So great to see photos of y'all, by the way.
Happy Anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Crowbone!
Let's take a stroll around the room, shall we...?
Some of the wider pictures got cut off, so if you right click and copy the URL from the properties you can paste that into your browser to see the entire thing.
Also, the triple pickup is simple to Operate Alpep! 3 switches on top turn each pickup on/off/on (middle is off), then there's a volume for each pickup, the varitone blend knob next to the varitone and then the varitone and master volume. I removed the standby switch and tone pot since I now have the varitone and didn't need 2 tone controls. You were more than welcome to play it as was anyone else. Maybe next time. Alpep, which one were you (Name)? I am sure I met you, but I didn't catch your screen name...
Thanks for the tips Billy and for the compliment on my shirt!
Crowbone said: Damn! You were actually born onstage, weren't you?
Yeah there's definitely something wrong with me. I have wanted to be the center of attention since I was a baby. Years of therapy are probably in order. My old lady thinks I'm nuts.
When do the video go up?
Wenzel said: Billy D Light was in the house tonight playing MY guitar!!! He's like a hero to me and it was cool to hear him tear it up with my gear... Billy's son was rockin' the house on the drums too
BTW thanks for that, Chris. A very nice thing to say.
You're welcome Billy! I want to be able to play like you and Fred do. I mean, real Rock and Roll! What I need to do is just hang out with you one day and absorb some of your guitar playing tricks like a sponge. Anyway, I need to practice at it more too, but I still had fun yesterday...
Yeah, I want to watch some video's...
