I thought being in a band WAS therapy. You mean it's not working?

My random thunks, reactions, and etc....
Overall: Great fun. It always is. My third time to play with Curt and John, second time with Aaron and Chris. New to everyone else, and looking forward to the next time with all.
On Billy III: about 10 seconds into his tenure behind the kit, I quit thinking about him not yet being double-digits-old. He's not merely "good for his age", he's good for anyone's age. A musician among men.
Hey Billy: on Lorrie Collins -- she's one of those gals that makes you wish you had a time machine and a 100%-effective pickup line, isn't she? Can you believe her first name is actually Lawrencine? Yeesh!
Hey, John, my second Gretsch was a Country Gentleclassic 58 RI. I left the TR at home. The Annie's recent, and yep, it's my favored guitar (the CG '58RI is my #2). I also brought my Michael Kelly mandola, which never got out of the case (again); and, although it's not a guitar, I also dragged along one of my Vox Continentals, which we did get to use. But ya know, had I thought about this being part guitar-show, I'd've brought more wacky toys. Next time, I will!
Mr. Spudnut slept through most of the proceedings, as usual.
It was great to have Nick (57Chet) riding shotgun with me. I pretty much talked his ear off, so I hope he was able to stitch it back on when he got home. Mr. Spudnut took to Nick immediately -- like, 5 seconds after walking in the door.
Special thanks to Scott and Lou, who soldiered through the afternoon on drums and bass. A 2nd gracias to Lou, and a thanks to Jimmy D, for disassembling and packing the Vox Connie after the event. All that loadout jazz is so tiring; doing that for me really helped my aging corporeal form out!
It was very cool to meet Jimmy D. He virtually never posts on the GDP; but you know, it's not (nor should it be) necessary to be a cyber-chatterbox in order to do the real-live stuff associated with the board. Lurkers: consider Jimmy D to be a good example and empowerment to attend these little events!
Big appreciation to Proteus and Fred (thanks for the CD; it was a kick to play "Drink Tickets" with you!) for the door prizes. I think all the players who hung around to the end left with something worth having.
Chris: when we connect on the Beatles songs, I think, "This could be a band." On improvising -- I've got next to no improvisational vocabulary in my fingers, so when Fred would point to me to kick out a solo, I was totally shvitzing, getting my fretting hand into what I hoped was a proper position and avoiding hitting the wrong spots in the box.
From the sounds of the sounds thus far posted, it sounds like Curt's hard work to record the proceedings went well -- as good a mix as one could hope for, considering the Guitarchestra onstage. But I do hope that he'll find it in his heart to lose the songs where my voice cracked egregiously.
If I had known we were going to undertake "Cortez the Killer," I would have learned the lyrics. A song at a tempo I can play! (We need to program a little more Neil Young next time around.)
Finally: Huge props to John and The Family Crowbone for making this happen and being such generous hosts.

And yes, that is a Black Bear in the background!
I continue to add scratchy tunes, ground issue(?) not anyone playing and please let me know when we've hit critical mass and it's time to stop!

Thanks Paul, I am very proud of my boys. You should hear the little one (Aidan) on Drums. Sounds like Keith Moon on Crack. :o) Billy was feeling extremely good after playing. Especially when I left the stage and he got to play without me. He kills on Guitar, Keys and Bass as well, and is now taking up the Sax. He got his sax and within 5 minutes was playing "mary had a little lamb" He has got more music in his little finger than I got in my whole body.
I've known Fred (GasMoney) for almost 20yrs and we almost never get to play together, so that was great. It was good to meet the rest of the guys. I was soaked with sweat by the end of my stay so I know it was great!
My favorite clip of Billy and Aidan here
That scratchy sound is just the overload on the input. You can still get the jist. Better than not having it. I have listened, sounds like Rock n Roll to me!!
That scratchy sound is just the overload on the input. You can still get the jist. Better than not having it. I have listened, sounds like Rock n Roll to me!!The metered levels are pretty low and it happens during no play zones so I can't figure it out but I agree on the R&R.
Billy:
Oh My God!!!
That's awesome.
I'm laughing and blown away at the same time.
They sound better than we did.
Curt, I'm Down, In my life and Sleepwalk would be cool to hear... I don't think you can reach critical mass. It's fun listening to all of them! Thanks for posting them Curt!
Aidan was two the the time. They Kill. I really tried to get him to play on Sunday, but he would not go for it. Frickin 3 year olds are unreliable!
Curt, That distortion just lends itself to the AM radio effect when riding under a power line. Cool if you think of it in that respect.
I used to have a friend who was an AM radio DJ.
When ever he went under a bridge you couldn't hear him talk.
Funny, did he sound like Mickey Mouse when you get too far away from him?
So I deleted the original link and put them all here.
Drink Tickets / Flying Saucers Of R&R
If anyone wants anything else they can think of I'll try to find it, in the meantime I'm getting back to my life!
What a good time on a Sunday afternoon! Nice to see so many Gretsches working in one spot. John thanks for all of you efforts to make it happen. My student (Noah) was totally thrilled to play with everyone and it really meant a lot to him.
Billy D is the man!!
Next time I'll get my upright bassist.
Fred
Nice! keep em coming Curt!
No Fred YOU are the man. The question is when are we gonna put a little band together and do some shows around town. With me and you and Sal and Your bass player we could blow it up Hard
What do you think?
How about this boys:
Rockabilly night at the Auction House?
There is plenty of room for a dance floor, and, heck, we'd pay to see ya play.
Thank you for the kind words. A humble songwriter am I, wanting the talent you all have, the grass, as they say, is always greener.
Next time, if we get a good number of players, I think we'll do the round robin approach so there won't be such a "concentration of talent".
Fred also suggested that perhaps we do a bit of Rockabilly, a bit of Brit Invasion stuff, Jazz, Flamenco, Peruvian Nose flute, etc... well maybe not the nose flute. What are your feelings on assigned times?
9 Guitarists at once can be a bit overwhelming, and I know we only had 6 hours to get it all in, and only one stage to do it all on, so please let me know what we can do to improve upon what is already a good thing.
That would be my only critique of the whole day...and maybe next time we get a photographer and we'll figure out how to mic an off the board recording?
Let's get some ideas going.
I think it's the board that caused the problem. We recorded with one mic and a feed from the board that the I.V. sound dude hooked up. I tried to isolate to one channel but couldn't.
Great venue and food John, please give thanks to your wife.
Hey, John,
I support the idea of measuring out the tunes and stage time. It will call for more planning and coordination at the front end; but I think it will also be conducive to making the best sounding music we can, and will give everyone a chance to contribute meaningfully and to rest...
I've never really wanted to sit down and stop at these sessions though I've wanted to rest, because I didn't want to seem to denigrate anyone's song suggestion by (in effect) declining to play it! So some programmed sit-outs would be good.

I was just in the process of catching up with this thread until ...
My dog just encountered his first skunk ... Doh!
Not a pretty scene at the old '57 ranch right now!
I'll post later ...
You guys pulled it off and in fine style. The spirit lives on!
Congrats to a succesfull Roundup, it seems as you guys had a blast!
The seed is sown for a future international one......
