Sounds like it's going to be a fun time. I wish I could be there but my employer seems to have other plans. Maybe next time...

Sep 26, 2008 5:25 p.m. bigsbyslur:
Hi everyone. I'm planning on coming. I would probably stick with some simple old classics that everyone knows, for example: "I Fought The Law and the Law Won.", "Peggy Sue", "Summertime Blues", etc.. I like Duane Eddy tunes, especially if someone plays tenor sax. Most everyone knows these as well as I do. It looks like our song lists will vary greatly, which is great, but there will certainly be songs that at least some of us won't know. I'm looking forward to meeting all you guys and I'm looking forward to hearing and learning from your music as well as seeing all of your great instruments. I'm sure that we'll come up with some common tunes once we circle up.

We should do a group jam of Sleepwalk. there are so many versions out there, that it could go on for a long time and not get repetitive

I can play some bass, a little blues harp and a little fiddle. I'm also thinking of bringing my bagpipes along to scare you guys. Is there anything else we'll need? Mics, etc..?

i like to think of myself as a musical utility infielder...in addition to guitar, bass, and vocals i also play (to some degree of functionality or another, not necessarily to say "well") keyboards, mandolin, dobro, harmonica, drums, and melodica. so if there are holes in any of the tunes i can probably plug them.
if you bring the bagpipes, you've gotta play them on "'Heroes'." rather than scaring me, the idea of the pipes in a jam setting makes me want to wind up the three fuzztones in series and do feedback along with the pipes.

i'd assume that Parabar has mics at the studio, but it probably wouldn't hurt to bring anything along that you think will be useful. i've never yet found myself saying "dang, we have too many mics/stands/booms/cords/etc."

dubkitty, you're covered on backing vocals on "Mona" ond "DBTR." Do you play the Gary Duncan parts or the John Cipollina ones?
I have 3 vocal mics with stands available plus one for kick drum --- if anyone wants to bring another one or two, it couldn't hoit!
I'll e-mail you an MP3 of "Compared To What" and I also have charts available which I can scan and e-mail as a pdf to anyone who wants one. And yeah, we can talk through the changes and run through the hard parts a time or two before we tackle the song in full. (And this is for fun, ya know --- we ain't tryin' to impress nobody!)
As for bagpipes ... I dunno, the ceiling is kinda low, and bagpipes are really an outdoor instrument ...
Reminds me of a story about the British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, who was known as a bit of a curmudgeon. After one of his concerts, a couple approached him to ask his advice about what instrument their young son should learn to play, expressing concerns about how bad a novice can sound on different instruments, and the length of time needed to attain reasonable proficiency. Sir Thomas' reply:
"Madam, without fail your son should take up the bagpipes. They sound exactly the same when you have mastered them as when you first pick them up." -

Northern Californian and Northern Nevadan GDP'ers, we need you to post your song selections here so that we can circulate materials well in advance of our Roundup.
Please list out three songs on which you would like to take the lead vocal/guitar solo. If you don't want to take the lead solo, but would still enjoy singing the song, or vice versa, please just indicate that and someone else can jump in on it. Please also have an .mp3 file of the song available so that you can send it to those that don't know the song, but want to play on it.
Dr. Gretsch, The Norm, jehu, etc., tell us what you'd like to be playing.
Thanks, gentlemen.

So, I'm in Arizona on business, and I had the opportunity to have dinner with Joe Carducci and got a little tour of the FMIC offices. Joe is looking forward to the jam, so let's get our collective butts in gear and get it going. Chime in with your selections if you haven't already!

I will also bring my Shure Beta 87 mic and stand.
bonedaddy, glad that you got to get together with Joe C. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of meeting him while he was out and about on tour with Fred Gretsch, you will really enjoy getting to know him. He is a fun guy, and is also quite a player.
Okay, guys, please post your song selections. Time is growing short!
And, for those of you whom I sent an e-mail to requesting that you reconfirm your intentions to attend, please do so at once. I am negotiating rooms and need to have a strong head count. Thanks.

For those of you on the fence about attending this event, don’t miss out. It ‘s sure to be a BLAST!
You’ll be in the company of good folk who have a common appreciation & love for Gretsch guitars. This gathering has all the ingredients of a great time with LIVE music, an opportunity to perform if you choose, meeting fellow GDP’rs “in-person”, gear show & tell, stealing licks by watching others play up close, fun & informative clinic presentations, raffle prizes, free commemorative gifts, food, laughter and so much more. When all is said & done don’t be the one who will later post, “DANG, I should’ a gone!”
Looking forward to meeting everyone. See ya there!!!
Joe

Joe, I had hoped to attend, if only to thank you in person for Brad's Americana, that you tracked down for him through Arizona offices and shipped to my job.
I already missed one opportunity in San Jose at Guitar Showcase.
Alas, I will be traveling out of state and must be disappointed at missing this event too!

Steve, we are really going to miss you at this event. After your having shared with us about your loss of Brad, I know that I, as well as I am sure many others, were looking forward to meeting you personally and telling you how much you mean to all of us.
I guess that this simply means that we will have to schedule another event, maybe next year some time!
And for all of you other GDP'ers who are debating whether or not to make the drive, listen up to Joe C., who has been at the highly successful GDP Roundup in Nashville this past summer. He knows a good time when he sees one! C'mon guys, let's get busy with our song selections on here. (Or you will be stuck listening to bonedaddy and I sing Wicked Game on an endless loop!)

definitely some jazz as well...i will probably need chord charts, though. xeroxed Real Book pages or the equivalent would be great. even without charts we could probably get some blues-related jazz tunes in, something like "All Blues" or "Blue Monk."

The greater variety of music, the better --- let's bring it all and play some of what we know and love, some of what's new and challenging, listen to others play styles we may not have a clue about, and generally have us a good ol' time!
I heard a great quote the other day that sums it up for me: "The more you love music, the more music you love."
