Okay gentlemen, why don't we get started on setlist suggestions. Three each. Make sure that you have .mp3 files for them so that those that may want to learn them so as to be able to join you can do so easily. If you have any special requirements on them, please speak up.

Okay, going with a major Northern California theme for my song requests, here are my three:
1. Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen (Santana). This one will require an organ player -- Parabar, you must know these by heart??
2. Oye Como Va (Santana). Same organ player requirements as other Santana.
3. Wicked Game (Chris Isaak). Acoustic guitar would be good on this one.
If we don't have any bass players, I will bring along my bass rig and play bass on some songs. I think that Jehu (from Reno) had talked about having his bass playing son join us...is that still the case? Is anyone else going to have a bass player there, or is anyone else that is skilled at playing bass willing to spend some time on it?

I play bass, and am planning on bringing the bass with me. Parabar says he has a bass amp setup. i also know a bass player who lives in the Petaluma area; i need to contact him and see if we can borrow him at some point. did we ever find a drummer? Marc knows drummers up there as well.

Ric12, I've got you covered on the Santana tunes --- were you thinking original versions a la Gregg Rolie, the jazzier Tom Coster versions from the Lotus/Moonflower era, or the current lineup with Chester Thompson? We'll need a GOOD drummer to pull these off -- I'll see if I can persuade one of the guys I know to make it.

Bass rig is in effect.

i'm still thinking, trying to decide whether to pick songs that lend themselves to a jam setting (i.e. songs that work with lots of soloing ) or songs that i just want to do.

well, i wouldn't pick anything i don't like to play. i love the JAMC, but i really don't know any of their material...they were one of the bands i got into during the period in the early Oughties when i wasn't playing guitar.

here's what i'm thinking at the moment:

"Mona" by Quicksilver Messenger Service--it'd be great if someone could holler the vocal harmony with me on the last four lines of the verse and in the chorus

"Down By The River" by Neil Young--this needs two- or three-part backing vocals in the verses as well as vocal harmonies on the chorus

"'Heroes'" by David Bowie. this will need multiple people playing the Fripp licks (the three-note clarion call between verses and the background melodic line that plays off against the vocal) more or less in unison; perhaps a synth as well? we could jam out at the end by winding down into D major or D minor (the song is in D major).

"Mona" and "...River" i've been playing since before i was old enough to drink; i've played "Mona" in every band i've ever belonged to. i've always wanted to try "'Heroes'" with a large group of guitarists.

i'm really tempted to go for "How Soon Is Now?" rather than "'Heroes'"...i figured out that you can do the "weeeeee-OWWWWW" doublestop lick in the intro on a Strat with the trem floating by bending up with the bar and then back down. but i don't think "HSIN?" would work as well as a basis for improvisation as "'Heroes'." <--NOTE: eccentric/ironic Bowie quote marks around "Heroes" preserved throughout

i'm good to go for most of these songs. i'll need to get MP3s of your songs, BD, and one of "Compared to What" as well...i've heard the song enough times that i know chunks of the lyrics, but i can't recall offhand how the music to the verse goes.

1 major request/idea: can we please make sure we know what we're doing before we play the tune seriously by at least going over the chords and perhaps playing a verse or an intro riff? it's always a drag when i jam on a song that i haven't figured out until 2/3 of the way through the song. and if we get the feel before we start everything will be better.

i'll spend some time this weekend getting sorted with the bass parts for the Santana stuff...i just want to make sure i can nail that descending bass line between "Black Magic Woman" and "Gypsy Queen." there's nothing more embarassing than blowing a lick everybody knows by heart (see: Phil Collins with Led Zeppelin at Live Aid).

But, let me say that I am down for "Down by The River." I can probably hit some of those harmonies with you as well. EDIT: By the way, here is a very Gretschy version of the song.

Rather than clogging up this thread with statements of the songs we don't know, why don't we send offline requests to members for the .mp3 files of the songs we need to learn? For those new to the board, click on the member's avatar (most of the time it works, but of late you have to be patient), then click on "Contact [member's name}" and a box will open where you can send private messages.

And I am happy to play some bass, if we don't have enough.

And Dr.Gretsch, we've heard you playing and know that you can probably play circles around all of us. Let's go, gentlemen!

I am imagining that there will be some time in the weekend for us to just woodshed songs that we all know, like Neil Young, Beatles or Stones, etc. I am already looking forward to this time with you guys.
