Once again, Orlando Rios and Rockabilly Magazine have teamed with Gretsch as exclusive sponsor to bring two days of rockin' roots-n-more to a great Austin, TX outdoor venue.

This year, the event comes from the Nutty Brown Amphitheatre – and once again The Rev. Horton Heat will be headlining. Other acts include rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson (with Slim Jim Phantom), Lemmy Kilmister and The Head Cat, Levi Dexter, Gretsch artists The Chop Tops, Psycho Deville, Wayne Hancock, Hillbilly Casino... and more.

Official GDP & Gretsch coverage starts Thursday evening after Mrs. P and I arrive, and continues through all the music on Friday, the CAR SHOW on Saturday, Saturday night's music – and through Sunday till the pics and audio are all up.

Naturally, Kim Falcon will be there – and Joe tells me he's found a treasure trove of Gretsch 125th paraphernalia, so the giveaways will be back.

As always, we'll follow up every spontaneous opportunity for interviews, backstage stories, and "local color."

A variety of rockabilly and roots music, cars, babes, and guitars – all coming to this very thread. Git ready to git'r done!

I'll second that Tsar. Those guys played in a bar of the casino that the Stray Cats played in 2007 when I went in Green Bay. Man, they knew how to rock. Great stuff. Ronnie Crutcher is on the Gretsch Artists' page too. His main Git-fiddle is a Lime Gold Hot Rod last I knew.

I love Austin. Hey Pro, if it gets hot enough, and you can squeeze a window for a break, go take a dip in Barton Springs. Cold springs natural area, water so clear you could (almost) drink it. A great place to refresh yourself if you need it.

OKAY then, how'bout we get started with some TRR09 coverage, then?

As I write, it's 12:21 pm Austin time, and I'm propped up on the leather couch in a deeelux (and probably not very authentically rockabilly) room at the downtown Hilton.

I've spent most of the morning getting my ducks in a row (I think; you never know for sure) to provide efficient, as-it-happens coverage of the event starting late this afternoon.

But the travel started yesterday morning, and an event thread wouldn't be complete without the customary (if not obligatory) travel pics.

We aeroplaned from Indy to Houston (if you're on Continental going anywhere, you have to pass through Houston first; I think it's a law), and thence from Houston to Austin.

Oddly, the first and longer flight was a 50-seater, where we got 1st row seats (that never happens) and had an interesting conversation with the single flight attendant, who had always wanted to fly, but didn't actually apply for and get the job till she was 40, after raising her kids.

For the 30 minute (airtime) flight to Austin, we got a 737. How do they figure these things?

And then what happened, huh?

Buddy of mine who moved here last summer picked us up at the aerodrome, hauled us downtown where we met Joe at the hotel and got settled. Then most of your GDP/FMIC crew went for lunch at a fabulous Mexican eatery favored by local notables. I forget its name.

For the record, said crew consists of FMIC Austin Artist Relations Guy Mark Weber, Joe, Kim Falcon, Nashville Artist Relations Guy Jason Herdnon, Mrs P, and moi.

From lunch, it was out to The Nutty Brown Amphitheatre (and Café) for a reconnoiter. The venue is well outside town, and is set up much like last year's venue, Stubbs, with an outdoor stage, dirt-n-gravel parking, and a restaurant. But to the recipe add ample grass, shade, outdoor table seating, and two "extra" stages/dancefloors – and a big parrot in a cage.

Huh! I thought you'd never ask.

Supper at Lick Creek

This famous area eatery is said (by QC no less) to have "the finest dining in Texas." Cuisine Magazine calls it "the one place you need to go," and even People, fergawdsake, says "the best pork ribs ... anywhere."

What you get is a veritable compound, WAY out of town, in the little non-town of Driftwood, Texas. The main building is build of rough-hewn stone quarried from the owners' ranch, and a variety of outbuildings of weathered barn wood and corrugated steel roofs are scattered around a wooded lot.

Dining is camp-style, on rustic tables, and there are essentially two menu items: a "plate" – your choice or a sampler of three meats – or "family style," which means as much as you want of everything (within the 90 minute sit-down limit). Cole slaw, beans, pickles, onions, potato salade, and choice of drinks fill in around the meat meat meat.

Only no beer or liquor. Folks carry their own in coolers, a local tradition.

Think of it as a cross between lumber camp chow, a summer camp cafeteria, and a family reunion.

Wheee dawgies. Kim (a vegetarian) was not along (the smell alone would have knocked her down); the rest of us ate ... er, several platesfull. Of everything. Till every one of us, each in his own way, was hurt.

By some measure, the best barbecue I've ever had – this stuff actually transcended food, and was something between candy and a religious experience. It had no mass or substance going down; it was ambrosia.

We've all paid for the indulgence later, but I'm sure we all agree it was worth it...

Rumor Control

There's a (largely substantiated, in print) rumor that Lemmy of The Head Cat is ill and will not be performing tomorrow as scheduled.

A follow-up rumor is that Duane Eddy will be performing instead.

I checked with an unnamed source, well-positioned to know, and am told that will NOT be the case.
