A lyric site has it as "Lennon," which is hardly definitive. But given all the other Beatles references in McLean's epic opus, and the dearth of communistical references (not to mention that Lenin would be an anachronism in the song's chronology)...
I'm taking Ripley's "Lennon."

According to the official Don Mclean Artist Website, it's "Lenin", not Lennon".

Oh, boy, there you go, TP. Now, you will have Proteus in a dither. Why didn't you come up with that BEFORE he awarded the prize? Also, at least offer Proteus a link to the correct answer.

Other than Buddy Holly, what other bands, musicians, or songs are referenced in "American Pie" (the song, not the movie)?
I'll need the lyric line and your interpretation.

If TP is right and the song says Lenin, I'm happy to let gcat have it. Gretsch is only 4 months old anyway, so it'll be a long time before he can wear it. I was just going to hang it on his wall.
Tim, it's up to you man. Whatever you decide is cool with me.

Well, McLean was wrong.
He was probably stoned at least. (Plenty of the lyrics admit of no meaningful interpretation.) Lenin could NOT have been reading a book on Marx while a quartet practiced in the park – not in the chronology covered by the song. If nothing else, the song does purport to be a kind of poetic history of rock & roll over a decade or more.
And that decade does not include Lenin's lifetime!
