This photo just screams Vegas. I keep looking for Louis Prima and Keely Smith to walk by, after having just finished the 1 a.m. show in the lounge.
Beautiful reflection on the trunk lid.

MAN- That is a killer pic! I had a 57 series 62 (4 door, white and not a Fleetwood as that one appears to be). Those bumper ends/exhaust outlets sure like to rust and those appear to be great.
"Whatever happens in Vegas, ends up on the GDP."
I love hotrods. I liked all the cars but the 30's ones scream mothers hide your children. Keep the pics coming
Proteus, you lucky dog. That old Chevy is definitely a 1950. The '49 was very similar but the grill was different.
Great coverage. I'm lovin' it!!!
The Retro Nation gathered throughout the afternoon, lining up at the registration table and getting their admission bracelets, meeting and greeting, some feeding slots and nursing drinks; others milling around in groups checking out each others' fashions and keeping it cool.
Joe and the Gretschketeers had set up the always-fabulous booth display, this time featuring a completely Filtertron-centric selection of Setzers, Falcons, one lonely green Sparkle Jet, and one even lonelier Electromatic Baritone.
No Dyna's in them pics!?!?!?!? Rockabilly guitars and no dyna's?!?!?!? What's this world coming to?
And now a hypertunnel from Vegas to the GDP Good Grooming Lounge, by way of the vendor rooms.
.
In the women's department, right this way, we have vintage and retro dresses, hats, shoes, much-more-mentionables-than-they-used-to-bes, and rockabilly bikinis.
.
And much more, I'm sure – I'm fascinated by the range of offerings, and may get more – and more closeup – shots before the weekend ends.
Not to be outdone, the gentlemen's department burgeons with suits and zoots, sportswear, shoes (and more shoes), hats, caps, belts and more.
.
But the well-dressed gentleman must also attend to his cut, his coif, his pomp, the glorious plumage which is the birthright of his sex – and for that, we have both professional service onsite and the proper petrolem by-products.
Then they opened the corridor to the vendor rooms (before the doors opened to the Mardi Gras room), and the shoppers rushed in.
.
and shopped...
.
Lovely Baby Jo waited to advise on feminine fashion...
.
While across the aisle, a record vendor flew the defiant flag of his manifesto:
Yes, Bobby, the Dyna deprivation seems a horror to me as well. All I can figure is that Joe's trying to keep them all for himself.
Meanwhile, back in the Mardi Gras room, all lay in wait for the music to begin.
.
And Lois Lane, fashionista, struck a pose with a fetching Gretsch (and her husband Ralph). Isn't she lovely?
Looks like Bobby Trimble's drumkit (I think its a WFL) is going to get the crap kicked out of it again. Poor fella!
I think the guy with the men's shoes in your pics makes them to order as well (your choice of soles, heels, pattern etc.-pretty reasonable prices too). That looks like the same display I saw at the Indy weekender and in Green Bay a few years back. I think he was out of NYC. Thanks for the cool coverage and pics Proteus!
The Good Grooming reportage angle! The hats!! The shoes!!! The Red Polka Dot Bikini!!!! The raven-haired amazon in the blue capri pants!!!!!
Temptation is the devil himself.
Fab coverage, Pro. I'll be watchin this one with great interest!
I agree Shuie - but not a brown suit in sight!! And apparently as rare as Dynas in that part of the country!
Proteus - some super pictures - you are a lucky man to be there. But there is one picture you took that stands out - and that is the evening shot of the fountain with the hotels as the backdrop - I reckon that is a classic!
Proteus my friend is you EVER make it down here to Louisiana, I will take you for the BEST gumbo you will ever eat.
That looks pretty good! I'm leary of eating anything that claims to be Cajun when I'm away for home.
Does that chick REALLY have red eyes?
Tim the red eye remover in iPhoto works very well. Great images, some more freighting than others!
Man this is GREAT !!!
I saw a guy behind the first Riviera pic that needed a Bra....And Pink and black shoes for men...
Thanks Proteus
Proteus, who is this man? I think I had a drink with him at that rockabilly bar on Friday night at NAMM after the Leo tour.
I swear, this is my high school Home-Ec teacher, Miss Pesterfield.
Great coverage, Prote. A total spin back in time. Every piece of clothing my mother ever wore seems to be hanging on those racks!
It looks like a total blast, actually. I'm hoping that we get to see you in a bit of Rockabilly gear before the end of the weekend. (Maybe the totally cool blue suede shoes seen above, the perforated crepe sole model, specifically.)
Or, at least the leopard-skin saddled pair in the photo above that one.
ha, that "kansas cowboy" is marshall scott warner, a drummer. he is a northeast based musician who works very hard in his field (not a mid last century kansas cornfield) producing and recording as well as live performances ( of which he is most likely gigging at viva Las) as well as with wanda jackson, who was inducted into the hall of fame this year, ever heard of her? probably not. well she deserves the hall of fame more than half the acts that have been introduced before her. including all those stiffs you listened to while this "retro" culture was bubbling with life under your nose for the past 30 years.
it is funny how some are reviewing all this as if it is new and foreign. but for us in the biz this is just daily life. viva las vegas is an institution of the lifestyle and the garb that you highlight as if you are viewing a zebra in a cage from the planet africon is standard lifestyle for these people. for many of those folks in the retro garb have been dressing like this and performing since the mid 70's, when rockabilly was finding new ears in the US and overseas. now we have rockabilly in nearing the top of the surface of the mainstream and people who listened to steely dan and air supply, are becoming interested in retro culture as their interest in pop music has landed them jobs as reps for music institutions who have finally noticed a piece of american culture to make some cash from, but which has been ignored by the general public for generations.
ugh
it is interesting to be the zoo animal 'as fly on the wall' instead of in the cage like those shockingly pointed out in your diary.
please note, this is all in jest! 'cept the bit about wanda jackson, kinda.
Curt I think those eyes are more of a result of the walk from the parking lot then the camera.
Chester - many of us have heard of Wanda Jackson - even here in England.
And the day she was inducted into the hall of fame there was a long thread on these page where everyone gave their support of the decision.
And she's still rocking!
i don't doubt you and especially many in the UK know of her, historically she has always had better reception overseas. nor do i doubt many here love her dearly.
but mostly i am poking fun at those grey mulleted fellas on the forum who are particularly aghast with their recent discovery of the verility of retro culture as it is displayed at Viva LAS VEGAS.
their posts resemble a national geographic photographer visiting with the natives of a south american village in 1925. silly and naive
haha
