Boardwalk entertainment never ends...
Now how'bout them Memphis Morticians?
This NYC-based quartet whipped the crowd of 75-100 into a frenzy which included ... ah, spirited! ... dancing, periodic episodes of wrecking among the big boys down front, the tossing of cans and bottles at the band (which they seemed to ignore), and beer baths both onstage and off. It's as wild as it got (at least last night), and as far as I know, no one got hurt...
They call what they do garage-a-billy psychosis, and that's a fair description. The general undertaker look may be shared conceptually with Unknown Hinson - but where Hinson's look hides an inventive cross of classic rock and humorous country, these guys fuse buzzsaw punk and jackhammer slappin' psychobilly. I hear echoes of The Chop Tops and The Shack Shakers.
Their stage presence is consistently engaging, from their distinctive sartorial splendor to the distinct personae which come through their stage motion (or relative motionlessness, as the case may be).
The lead singer gave a testimonial to Billy Lee Riley, to whom this year's fest is a tribute - but the question is, do these Morticians come to praise Memphis - or to bury it?
Looks like...

Sounds like...

After the show...
Since it was so hot in Cha Cha's, Kim, Jason, and Jason's fiancée took a table outside on the club's boardwalk patio.
One finds that Kim attracts all sorts of people, and she handles them both wisely and graciously. Among these were several apparent regulars of this area of the boardwalk, including the barker who calls people in to the Shoot A Live Human Freak Target With Paintballs game located in a vacant lot (decorated as an urban war zone) next to Cha Cha's.
Alas, no pics of this guy. Kim was too late to take some shots last night (the target refused to suit up for five shots), but was promised five extra shots to come back today. I'll introduce you to the characters when that happens.
In the meantime, he sat at the table and regaled us with tales of his "colorful" life. (He also taught the girls how to raise a napkin, but the less said about that, the better.)
Jelly Boy the Jelly Boy the Clown stopped by the table as well. He's a member of the Squidling Bros Circus Sideshow and Burlesque, which performed yesterday. (And it must have looked something like this video.) Since we'd missed the show, he reprised his sword-swallowing for Kim.
We have winners of the Gretsch license plates...
... now how about Bigsby T-shirts?
Bit harder this. First two right answers to this question, answered here:
I need the names of all four members of The Memphis Morticians.
Trash Only, Frritto Bandito, Von Erickson, and Crypto Fur email sent
HI Proteus Trash Only Von Erickson Crypt O Fur Frritto Bandito Yeah hope that does it 68 COCMEBACK
After the show wound down last night, and the display guitars were safely stowed, we made our way to our waterfront (sorta) hotels to regroup.
Then it was back out at 3 AM with the whole crew for breakfast at a most amazing restaurant (whose name I've already forgotten...but I'll chase it down). This 24-hour "diner" is just a few blocks from my hotel on Emmons Ave. I put "diner" in quotation marks because I've never seen a more complete menu. Really the menu was superfluous, because I think you could literally name ANYthing you imagined and they'd have it.
PLUS they have a young blonde waitress from the Ukraine whose accent is devastating.
Today's adventure begins in a little less than an hour. I'm told tonight it's no bands at Cha Cha's, and all burlesque. I just don't know what to think about that. Since I missed the show at Viva Las Vegas in April, maybe I'll take some of this in - just to see what it's all about, of course.
I might have to take pictures to document it.
And I understand there are bands at a couple other nearby venues associated with the festival, so there's that.
Stay tuned!
And BINGO DINGO, we have winners.
Back in a bit with more winnable trivia.
I love Kim's reaction to the sword swallowing, haha.
It's been said many times before but Proteus, you rock. Outstanding job as always.
oops. Didnt really see what i wrote there when I typed my own pagename, but the answer should be correct though
Yeah.. I saw that pic of the sword swallower, and Kim's expression and thought.. " Nope.. thatsd a joke thats just toooo easy"...LOL
Hey Tim.. any chance of Kims Sig on anything?
Man, I'm missing home too! BK looks great. I didn't realize that top hatted dude was a frontman. He's quite the fixture on the tiny NYC rocka/psychobilly/surf scene.
Thanks for the pics, Proteus!
Yeah... I really need to get my butt back there soon....I've been homesick for along time now. I grew up back stage at most of the venues, ( MSG, Nassau Colossium, Giant Stadium, CBGB's, The Paladium..etc)taking the train from Long Island to the city to run around on the weekends, all that music and non stop life...absolutely no music scene here..
Great stuff Pro!! Kepp 'em comin'.. more girls.. More Gits... MORE KIM!!
Now that looks like a good time! Wish I could be there. Maybe next year. Have fun Tim!
The video clips are a nice addition, Proteus! Keep up the good work.
By the way, it certainly looks more enjoyable than it would be on a hot July afternoon.
Is that some sort of Supro/ Eastwood copy the Memphis Mort's guitar player is playing? I've not seen that. Anyone?
My goodness... another Rockabilly weekend missed (who knew?). Almost made the drive up today, but didn't -- planning on going Monday if the festivities will still be in gear.
I have lots of reading to catch up on... just seeing Kim on a Coney Island merry-go-round is enough to make this thread memorable.
Tim, I haven't read through it all yet, but in case you haven't' experienced it yet, and in case it hasn't been said, do go to Nathan's. GO. Get a dog with the works. In some ways, it is equal to Tibet.
PLUS they have a young blonde waitress from the Ukraine whose accent is devastating.
IIiiiiiiiiii......love New Yoooooooooorkkkkkkkk.
Good Melville reference there, Ishmael.
