what are the guts from?

What model is it really? Seems to be a bit high price for a total rebuild. Is anything original?
-
bobcat
Looks like two 6v6s, I also see 2ax7s, I would guess 25 watts, I think the fact that he doesn't describe the amp, makes me wonder. I doesn't tell us anything! Reverb? Tremolo? Wattage? year?
-
T_Mayes
Yeah, I'm not affiliated with the sale of that amp and don't know anything about it. Just thought I'd alert the GDP of a possible deal.
I'm actually kinda a agreeing with bobcat now. This person doesn't give a good description at all...fishy. If its anything like my western and electromatic amps of the same era, it has tremolo but no reverb.

It strikes me as a wormy way to say that the amp was not a cowboy version in the first place of the model, but the regular one, and that this guy did the conversion work himself, save for the leather tooled trim. There is a model of the cowboy amp with this sort of 15" configuration--I don't know what the tube set up was etc, but I do know it had a 15'' Jensen.
I forget the model number, but Gasmoney has one, he did a thread on it a couple of years ago.

The "ever so slight a hum" part would spook me.

I think its a decent price for that. Where else you going to get one? Real ones push 4000. $, and this one probably sounds better

I'm the proud owner of the restored large Cowboy Amp. The cosmetics, while not 100% true to the original, are great! The amp is beautiful. It has the original speakers which have been re-coned.
I'm having my amp tech give it a thorough going over - something I always do with vintage amps when I get them.
I think the price was very fair.
I also have a near mint Cowboy amp with two oval Rola speakers and a tweeter. It will be interesting to compare them though, with a 15" speaker, I'll bet the big one blows the little one away.

Hi Ric,the 6161 Amp of mine is from 56 or 57 and also has this slightly hum in the sound.I guess it´s because the change in voltage or the old transformers, that caused it.

I think you will be pleasently suprised with the sound compared to the smaller Rola amp.
I have a Rola equipped 1957 Cowboy amp and a 1957 15" equipped Electromatic. The Electromatic blows the Cowboy out of the water!

I got the amp back from my tech today. It needed a lot of work but now sounds awesome! It's definitely one of a kind.

So you're into it for roughly $1700 for a completely reconditioned, one-of-a-kind tone monster? You should probably thank the guy who sold it's soon to be ex-wife! Killer score if it sounds anywhere near as good as it looks.

How is it ,after the repair with the humming???

The hum is gone and the tremolo is awesome. With the large Jensen and relatively low power output it breaks up nicely. Very warm - more jazzy than Fender country twang.
My tech is an incredible guy. Working with a schematic for a similar (but not identical) Gretsch amp he was able to completely and accurately restore the original circuitry.

I feel sorry for the guy who sold it to me. He obviously had a vision for what the amp could be but he lacked the funds or technical expertise to accomplish it. Yes, his ex-wife did me a big favor but I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Sad thing is I can't even contact the seller to tell him that his amp is now what he hoped it would be.
When the amp arrived from the seller I was afraid I might have made a $1200 mistake. When I contacted the seller to tell (not complain) about the problems with the amp, the poor guy took it personally and thought I was going to complain to Paypal. I quickly reassured him I expected to have to pay to have it checked out. The rubbing speaker cone was a surprise but the OEM Jensen was designed to be a PA speaker and not really suited for a guitar amp.
Not quite as good a deal as the $75 I paid for my near mint dual-Rola Round Up but a good acquisition nonetheless.

Do you have an idea, what eliminates the hum.Maybe it helps to figure out what makes my amp humming
-
Michiel
Voodoo: I'm assuming you are referring to the Artist, or do you happen to have an old Gretsch too?
Bring it to the Euro roundup. I may be able to help you out with the hum when I can poke around in the amp.
[edit] d'oh, just read you're referring to a 6161. Anyways, BRING it!
-
Voodooholly
M I will bring it ,of course, to the roundup.I think I´ll bring the Artist and the Excelsior ,too.
That´s the good part of little amps
you can bring more than one!!!
-
Michiel
Ah, or you just get a moderately sized van.

A Renault Clio must be enough for 3 Amps,2 or 3 Guitars and a little Girl

Not really sure what eliminated the hum. The amp sounded so bad when I got it that the hum described by the seller might have been an improvement! A I've said before, my tech is a wizard - not quick, not cheap - but when he gets done you've got a perfect amp brought back to factory specs. You can see the parts that he replaced in an earlier post, maybe that will help your tech.
