So is it my imagination - or are these two amps basically the same except for cosmetic details?

No you're right, but the Gretsch is better.
As field said, it's got the open back so it sounds more open and less boxy.
As I said, it looks better and it's got 'that great Gretsch logo.'

Hm, at Musician's Friend the Fender is US$199, the Gretsch is US$195. However only the Fender is available in Hong Kong and they're selling it for US$185. I'll have a look and see if one of Tom Lee's other outlets has the G5222, but I kinda doubt it.

Both have the same internal mod options.
But this looks more than $10 cooler. IMHO, of course.
I have about $80 in internal mods - speaker, preamp tube, and cap.
Worth every penny. I use it as an everyday practice and basic recording amp.
