Posted last week after I had settled a Bigsby on my G6196.
Pleased to see you are still in excellent health.
Had a bit more of a look at the Gretsch Amps and must say they look better than I had recalled. But man they attract a premium that makes them astronomical in Oz; about $6000AUD.
But they are cute with the variations on speaker sizes and styling; so if they sound as good as they look and better than comparable amps I guess over there they are desirable.
Jeff O(h that's gonna hurt) said: I'll bet my left nut that RHH also has a Fender Super connected at that same time (he always uses 2 amps).
Someone has to find out wether he used just the Gretsch amp or not after that bet.
Sometimes he uses one or the other depending on the room, I believe.
To those who have declared "NO" (i.e., they are not worth the money) -- Who among you (Jeff, Chonny and others...) have actually played one?
If you have played one and decided they are not worth the money, I will respect that. I'll also be curious abut your reasons. But if you have NOT played one and made your judgement, that sort of "review" does not seem to fit with the types of input people look for here.
Actually, he was switching between the Gretsch and a Fender amp (I forget which model). At one point that screen was covering the Gretsch, and when he switched to the Gretsch he moved the screen. He was also playing around with the Gretsch before the show during sound check, and I heard him talking with Joe Carducci after the show about how much he liked the Gretsch amp.
If you guys are looking for a GREAT price on a Gretsch amp, I would give Rocky at Street Sounds in Brooklyn a call. He made me an amazing deal on an Executive.
all I can say is YES! the Executive is hands down the best amp I've ever owned (and I've owned a lot!) its wattage is perfect (for me at least) as I like to keep the amp as hot as possible without killing myself or the band and the cab dimensions allow for a really full tone. I don't really find it overly heavy as my little ampeg is about the same weight (probably because of the altec I've got in it) The only thing i might have done to it is have an external speaker jack put on it so I can run it with my 4x10 cab as well. I'd really like to try the Variety next!!

So, someone was mentioning the other day that you were talking with them about what your signature Gretsch model would consist of if they made one... enquiring minds want to know, what would it be???

For years I've been saying if you are going to lay out this kind of money for guitars like what we're buying you should do the same with an amp if the amp gets you the results you need.
I'd have to spend $2750 to replace my Ambassador 50 today and it's no big secret I can't do that. If I had to do it I would!
I've only heard the Playboy and Execcutive and was wildly impressed with both. Are they overpriced? Yes! Are they worth every penny? Again if that's what you are looking for then yes! Like Paul I want to hear the Variety. This lil Allen I put together firmly puts me into the 3x10 fanclub. There's a lot of good things to come out of the Gretsch amps but I can't help but wonder if there would be so many questions if it had a Victoria nameplate on it instead.
I've got one of my Executives up on ebay for auction (under shanghai_guitars). It's a great amp but I'm moving over to using my own home built amps. I'm not a big fan of the Eminence Legend speakers they stick in them. It has a weird midrange signature. The amps themselves are great. The thing is, I can build something that sounds just as good. Plus it doesn't have the price tag. Only reason why I'm selling it...
How different is the Gretsch 3x10 to the Fender Vibroking (my current fave)? I've not as yet checked out the specs...
I've played several different ones on many occasions. The BEST VALUE is to watch your local GC. They sold a Victoria for $600 a couple years back, and a couple of Kendricks for $700 or $800. They don't know what they got, and tag 'em high. When nobody buys they keep creeping down low.

Very cool prize there bobcat. In the photos that I saw from the Northwoods Jam, it looked like you were one very happy winner.
I have spent a bit more bonding time with my Executive of the past few days due to a lightening of my work load, and have found it to be a great amp. It is certainly worth every cent that I paid Rocky at Street Sounds, particularly since he was blowing them out the door with his pricing. I got what I consider a very fair price on the amp and am most pleased with it.
Ok JeffO{be quiet}, Yes it is worth the money!!! If I had 2300 extra bucks I would definitely have a Playboy! I had 600 extra so I bought a Blues Deluxe, Good amp but nor even in the same league. See Jeff if you would have showed up,,,,,well,,,you know.

I found out that to me ears 6v6 based amps seem to like my Gretsch 6120 with Stock FIlter'tron pups!
I've tried the following amps
Gretsch Executive, Swart AST Pro Swart AST Head MKII + Matching 1 x12 Cabinet, Valvetrain 315 (no reverb/no trem), Victoria Regal II
The amps I did not bond with were the Gretsch Executive and Vicoria Regal II (made by the same company Victoria amps)
The Valvetrain 315 without a reverb/Tremolo really sounded rich with a smooth breakup! ($1600 USD)
I greatly enjoyed the Swart AST Head MKII + Matching 1 x12 Cabinet lets you not only swap 6v6 with 6L6 but also EL 34's! without re-biasing. ($2500 USD)
My Tonequest is not over but if I were to spend $3000 on a new amp, it would not be on the Gretsch Executive. I would probably look into A Divided by thirteen amp or a Louis Electric.

Be careful with the jackweed. I planted some next to a patch of pussywillow, and in a few months I had a whole field of baby's breath. Total pain in the arse. . .
I'll let you know if they are worth it next week. I just bought a Playboy but it is an international sale and it will take a while to get here. I tried one here in the UK and liked it but you never know how good an amp is until you spend time with it and I only spent 5 minutes. In the UK these amps are over twice the US price

I was at my local GC a while back and saw a used Playboy for 1800 bucks. Then I went back 3 weeks later and it was tagged at 800!
Still kicking myself for not picking it up, but I wasn't in a good place to do it at that moment.
Just ran a GC used gear search. Punch in Gretsch in the Amps category in the search function on the right. There's a Playboy for $1K in OH, and a 60s 6155 for $800! Good one Jeff O!
