My guitar cable gets twisted all the time. Unless I stretch it out and play across the room, it twists up into a knot. Would my amp be causing this? Is is unavoidable? I would love to get it fixed if I can.

Stop spinning in circles. That's what's doing it. You might not realize you're spinning, but you probably are. Or every time you take your guitar off you turn it in such a fashion that it twists the cable up.
The other thing that will cause cables to get all screwy is not winding them right. If you just ball it up, or wrap it around your arm like an extension cord you'll wind up with a junk knotted cable. Either coil it nicely, or "over-under" wrap it. That's where you do one wrap like a normal coil, then twist it the other way so it wraps under the last wrap. (I never realized how hard this is to explain without being in the same room.)
If all else fails just buy one of those coiled phone cord type of cables.

Try laying your cable out in the sun for a while, unrolled and straight. After it has had a chance to warm up roll it back up LOOSELY. I had a few cables I used to roll up real tight to fit in a case and they would coil themselves up like you describe.
I would like to learn that over-under wrap if anyone has a better description or a picture.

Just use a small wrist flick.
Try this. hold the end of your cable in your left hand.
Now, as you're bringing lengths of cable up to form the coil, hold the cable (with your right hand) between your index and thumb, with your thumb on top, index on the bottom (thumbnail facing the sky)
now, here's where it gets really hard to explain, but it's really quite simple.
With your right hand, roll the cable between your fingers, your thumb goes towards the right, index towards the left.
After having done that, move the cable and hold the coil in your left hand and repeat as necessary.
You'll know if you did it right with the throw test. you should be able to hold one end of the cable and toss the whole coil, and it should unravel without knotting.

Give it a 1/2 twist every time you loop the cable. Tennis Nick just explains it differently. This works with everything from string to rope to mic and guitar cables to wire of all sizes and garden hose. Use a heavy string to tie your coil. I deal with miles of wire from mic line to 8 circuit lighting snakes. This works.
Never, ever wrap a cable around your arm.

Im a professional wire puller (custsom A/V installer)and i wrap a lot of wire around my arm but the guys are right you really shouldn't if you can help it. With that said one one of the biggest problems with twisting is simply cheap wire that has a stiff high memory jacket, try to use cable that is limber but not too much so that the jacket is too soft to protect the wire.

Get a Spectraflex. It won't go in a knot, it'll just curl around your leg like a boa constrictor.

No, your amp is not causing this. Only the fact that the cable is plugged into something. However, check out Spinstigator.com and your problem will be solved...guaranteed.
