Treble Bleed Mod Gretsch Master Volume Easy

  1. Posting this so you don't have to work to hard figuring it out. I got a 2011 6129T Silver Sparkle Jet with Filtertrons. I noticed when I turned my master volume down the treble spanky sparkly sound I love almost went away. I first thought the tone caps on the switch could be the problem NOPE. Then I thought it could be just the pickups and I need TV Jones. I posted my problem here and Lizardkinged suggested the treble bleed mod. I started my research and here is the result easy easy easy and so worth it.

    1. You need a .001 microfared capacitor. I had on hand the cheap ceramic caps which worked perfectly. Stewmac number 102 others use orange drops and other caps it needs to be .001
    2. Pull your master volume out easy on a jet with the access panel. Put some protection around to avoid burning the back of you guitar with you soldering iron. Stupid accidents do happen I know personal experience.
    3. Solder the cap to the two lugs that your pickup wires are soldered to on your master volume. Just don't solder it to the lug that is an obvious ground lug. With this easy mod the guitar master volume is very very useful. I can run it at 1/2 to 2/3 and not lose any treble then I can turn it up for a solo and then back down without any treble tone loss.
  2. Ya know? I would try that,,BUT since I have the Hollowbody,, That ain't gonna happen! Very nice post! Wish you great luck! MK

  3. Very useful. This is a problem I have, too. I like to use the master volume for a tweak of volume boost for solos, but lose to end pretty quickly. Although it's interesting that I notice this more with my EL84 amp than with my 6L6 amp. I may get my guitar guy to make this mod the next time the guitar needs work. In the meantime I've been trying to develop a greater range in my hands and playing to vary the volume. That is a much harder mod after 30+ years of playing!

  4. Mark after you have pulled the guts out of three holllow bodies you do get pretty good at it. It is still a pain in the butt and takes a lot longer. I have done several times over the years. I sure like the access panels on the Jet for this kind of work. :)

  5. I did a treble bleed mod on my 6120RHH. It's a must! I also used a 150k resistor in line with the cap though.

  6. I have it done on all my guitars , first thing. Its essential, in my book.

Why don't guitar companies do this as a default from the factory?

  7. Will the mv pot come out the f-hole or do you have to remove a pickup?

I think the hardest part will be finding a cap up here in the mountains... I don't think there is an electronics store or a rat shack withing 50 miles of here... :|

This is my exact problem, Even if you sent me 100 Caps I could not get a pro to do that job! I am sure I cannot do it. Never soldered in my life and aint gonna start on the Gretsch! AHHH One day I will take it to someone. Everything is 3 hours away from here.. There are 2 stores, but they will take the Gretsch for a week! No Way Man,,

  11. Your orange drop cap and 150K resistor will be in the mail Tuesday. Have fun!

  12. MacStephen, did you put the resistor inline in series or in parallel with the cap?

  13. I found this info while searching the net..... scroll towards the bottom for the treble bleed mods....

Soldering is really easy to do. Here is a five minute tutorial that will make you a pro in no time at all.

    Basic Soldering

Also, if you have one of these. it is almost impossible to screw up. Just practice a few times with some scrap wire.

  15. Thanks for the great & helpful write-up Raye. That's a mod I'd like to try on my Gent. I may want to replace the master vol pot with a pull-switch pot to make it switchable.

For my style the treble roll-off is a good thing sometimes. But with my recent amp-build I'm still looking to emphasize the high-end a bit.

  16. I've done this mod to most of my guitars. If you tie a piece of cotton thread around the shaft of the pot before dropping into the body and use some copper wire to manipulate it through (or one of those telescopic magnets like a car ariel) it's not that bad a job. You should be able to get them through the F holes if you don't want to remove the p'ups. :)

  17. Another common method for that is to slide some of that silicone or rubber tubing over the pot's shaft. (the type used for aquarium pumps). Learned that the hard way on my Ibanetsch conversion.:)

  18. 1 on using the surgical tubing can be bought at any sporting goods store. I put one on each shaft when pulling or installing new wiring in a hollow body with gentle touch and some finesse it really goes pretty easy.

  19. Setzer did this mod for me when he tricked out my 5122. Absolutely a solid investment in sound. Wish I had it on everything.

  20. MacStephen, did you put the resistor inline in series or in parallel with the cap?

    Just like this.

  21. Thanks Doug! :D

  22. Baxter, please make this topic sticky.

  23. I agree the treble bleed mod has kept me from not liking my guitar. After having searched this out I find that it is a real common problem that is easily fixed.

  24. Except when you live in no mans land and aint monkeying with a proline! I am a butter bean

  25. My motto has always been "I can't screw it up bad enough a professional can't fix it." :D needless to say I have paid a lot of professionals over the years mechanics, plumbers, painters, roofers, guitar techs, amp techs etc, :P
