Fix the knob

1

For the second time in nearly 2 months, the volume know of my Gretsch 6120 DSV came off during rehearsal yesterday. I think I understand why this happens : it's because I roll it off and all the way open in a quick movement during the heat of the action. Is there a smart way to fix it to prevent it from coming loose ? One could expect from pro line guitars that the knobs are able to withstand intensive use, no?

2

Maybe try loc-tite on the set pin threads.

3

Clear nail polish will hold it in place. Use sparingly on the threads.

Yes, if the set screw is tightened.

6

Don't use loc-tite or nail polish if you ever want to remove the knob again. The set screw should be sufficient. Just tighten it up enough.

There are Loc-Tite products like this that are removable thread-lockers.

Use them all the time in our products. They keep the screw from working itself out, but no problem removing when you want to.

8

Or you could just tighten it enough.

9

remove the set screw and take a pin file and cut an X into the end that sets against the post. Assuming the threads in the knob are not stripped.

If not call this mechanic pronto

10

ah, nothin like quality rear end work

cheers

Blue loc-tite or elmer's glue.

Either one is a perfect choice. It will stay put until YOU want to remove it.

13

Or you could just tighten the set screw.

14

DO NOT use loc-tite no no no!! A small drop of nail polish will do.

Because???

16

You're not tightening it enough, that's all, unless the knob is threaded or damaged.

17

If you use one tiny drop of blue Loctite, you'll have no problem removing the set screw. If you use red or green, it will require C4.

Elmer's white glue will give you the same results. The set screw will be easy to remove if you should wish to.

Clear nail polish will also do a good job and be easy to remove should the need arise.

Out of the three, I would use Elmer's because it is water based and will do no damage to a lacquer or poly finish. should some get on it by chance.

Tavo... could you please give me the name of that guitar tech you photographed? Nothing wrong with my guitar right now... but I'm sure I could introduce a few problems.

Loc-Tite No No No No blue, green, red, No No No...think of "Land Of A 1,000 Dances" Naa, Na Na Na Naa...Naa Na Na Naa, Na Na Naa. Na Na Naa Na Na Naa

Why you ask ? Because I had a very baaaad expeirence with a g6120 and blue loc-tite. I warn you just like I would you warn you not to play with old military ordinence

Loc-Tite is for Harleys and Fords.

Never had a problem removing anything coated with blue Loctite, but I still think if I were the man with loose screw, I'd use Elmer's. It is absolutely idiot proof. I use it, so you know I'm not lyin'. :D

So basically we got 4 tips: - 1. nail polish - 2. blue loc-tite - 3. Elmer's glue - 4. nothing of the above should be used on a guitar just tighten the screw

Well if just tightening the screw would do the trick, it would do the trick, which apparently it didn't (enough). I feel most comfortable with using nail polish on a guitar.
While examinating the knobs, I discovered, however, that the master volume knob had way more 'play' to it than the other control knobs so I replaced it with the neck pickup volume knob which seem to fit the shaft more. I think the problem is solved and if it isn't I will apply a little nail polish to the screw.
Never had these problems with plastic knobs on Stratocasters or Epiphones but all this is part of the Gretsch charm. Thanks, everyone.
