Guitar player June '12, 10 things you gotta know 2 play like DE

  1. In this months new Guitar Player magazine June '12 issue on Page 84 "ten things you gotta do to play like Duane Eddy"

It was funny when the mail lady pulled up and handed me this new June issue and once again there are pictures of the SAME freakin artists that seem to rotate on this magazine... BUT lo and behold a feature article on Duane! check it

  2. I remember having a subscription from 89-91 and it just seemed to rotate between Steve vai, joe satriani, and SRV on the cover.

    exactly.. or Hendrix

  4. They just shoulda kept Hendrix full time. I love Hendrix. Hate when people talk about "Little Wing" as an SRV tune. Jimi's version has 50 times the soul and musicality to my ears. And he wrote the thing.

  5. while my older boy's middle name is Hendrix, and I think I own everything of his including original vinyl... I just cant agree with ya Strum.. Hendrix was a pioneer but SRV's Little Wing is the cat's pajamas. a Whole'nuther level of TONE

  6. To each his own. SRV may be rad or gnarly, it might rock, but it sure ain't got the swing to be called "cat's pajamas." But what I really want to know is why your new avatar has the same hair as Mugsy's? It's really confusing me!

  7. Guitar Player is nowhere near as horrible as Guitar World - awful metal guitarists you've never heard of week after week!

Nice feature on DE though - the key word is "twang!"

  8. I read both mags, and Guitar Player is more diverse for sure, while Guitar World does appeal to more hard rock/metal players, but that's not to say these guys are awful. There are some very talented metal guitarists out there. Metal might not be your cup of tea, but the musicianship is definitely there. I could say the same about rockabilly and surf. There are tons of guys out there and to someone who doesn't like the genre, it would all sound the same to them. Since I love Metal, Surf, Rockabilly and a plethora of other styles, I keep an open mind.

  9. Dont forget Premier guitar magazine!

ps. strum' ..those redheads are a unique bunch

  10. Love them freckel'd tigresses

  11. Here's a page from the Guitar Player article - thanks to Neil Gribby for sending me the original.

  12. Steve Vai, Joe Satriani - or live?

The only player of that ilk that I could abide was Eric Johnson.

  13. while my older boy's middle name is Hendrix, and I think I own everything of his including original vinyl... I just cant agree with ya Strum.. Hendrix was a pioneer but SRV's Little Wing is the cat's pajamas. a Whole'nuther level of TONE

Yeah, I agree here. SRV's version of Little Wing is proof God exists ;-)

  14. I just have to say something about that song that is proof to how I was raised to hate on hippies and their music. The first time I ever heard little wing was on a late night tv show and it was Sting performing with his band. I was floored, thought Sting had finally come up with the ultimate dreamscape tune and bought the album. What an idiot, I thought it was a Sting creation.

So fast forward to the year SRV died '90 (it was significant as my wife's mother, stepdad and baby brother died in a collision caused by a motorist who fell asleep at the wheel, and I became the caretaker of a 12yr old girl the 2nd year of marriage.. she, my sister in law was the only one not in the car...tough year) and I'm at some auto store, chief auto or something, and I'm nosing through the store in hog heaven and this song comes over the speakers that has the most incredible guitar tone and out loud like a lunatic I yell to the parts counter guy "Hey dude is that Sting song being covered by SRV? What album?" ..there's a pause and the answer comes back like I've just farted in the store "Uh sir that is LITTLE WING BY JIMI HENDRIX" :)

so I immediately went out and bought Axis Bold as Love and put Little Wing on.. a few minutes later in disgust I'm like "what is with that stupid bell thing ringing and why is the song so fast? Stevie Ray Vaughn should've own that song" I still dont like Hendrix version of that tune but I own everything Hendrix ever did including the dumb xmas recordings. BUT SRV does hendrix better including this gem from the El mocambo performance in 83' "Third Stone from the Sun.. here is the Entire Live performance but scroll in 42 minutes for one badass hendrix tune http://youtu.be/smSiCjYIvrM

  15. El Mocambo....yeah, I played there. :D

    Now back to the thread.

  16. so have you nailed those 10 things to play like Duane?

  17. My favorite covered Hendrix tune (other than SRV Little Wing) is Gary Moore's version that he performed for the Strat Pack DVD!

  18. Link...

  19. I'm 150% with strum on the Hendrix thing. Hendrix, along with beer, is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy.

SRV plays some gnarly Hendrix covers, true. And his have an incredible ferocious quality. But I'll take Hendrix every time. His "speaks" with something extra.

Take Voodoo Chile. Jimi's is talking. SRV is playing the notes real hard w/ a wah. Don't get me wrong, it's soulful, but not like Hendrix's. Hendrix Voodoo Chile is from somewhere else.

On Little Wing, I honestly don't thing SRV could have pulled off singing it "right". Great version though. Also, Hendrix was half improvising it. I have a few studio outakes and none are alike. It's played very spontaneously, and we (SRV included) sit down to master the little bits of improv that are in there.

I love SRV, but Hendrix trumps. Hell, they're his notes after all.

On the hippy thing, T, I'm there with ya. Not a fan of the movement, but some killer jams came out of that mess!

Now, I need to find the OP's Duane article! Sorry for more derail...

  20. ...And super +1 to the redheads!!

  21. Don't forget "Castles made of Sand"...slip into the sea...eventually. I think Axis Bold as Love is his best work. Tone, songs, lyrics the entire album works.

For all the youngsters, an album is this GIANT piece of vinyl upon which there are songs - and even weirder - on both sides.

It was crazy because when you went jogging, you had to strap these big players on your back to have music. No, not really.

  22. so have you nailed those 10 things to play like Duane?

    – WIREDTURTLE here SINCE2002

Haha, I could nail everything in an article called "100 Things You Need To Know To Play Like Duane Eddy" and I still wouldn't sound anything like him. :D

(I DO have a Dyno Brain, though)

not only that, but they were usually recorded to listen to from the beginning to the end in a single setting. Not like today where you pick and grab individual tracks. 8-o

Ha! +1 to all of that! (except I'm a Billy Brain).
