Odd serial number question

I recently got a Twist (Corvette) to refurbish and am puzzled by it's serial number, which is 44163. It's pressed into the tip of the headstock, much like my 1961 Corvette. I think this Twist is a 1963, judging by the truss rod access at the base of the neck and the date codes on the IRC pots (6205). That serial number, in looking at the charts here, would put it in the 1961 era though....I'm confused..anybody have an explanation?

Although it's been stripped of finish and much of the hardware, I'm fairly certin it is a Twist. It has a clear guard (that was badly painted black at some point) the unique Twist style red knobs, and I can see remnants of the original finish in the various cavities...a bright, fully opaque, red.

That's very interesting. SN 44622 is a single cutaway 6120. Those were supposedly discontinued in 1961. Maybe the single cutaway lasted into 1962.

I doubt anyone could put an exact cutoff date on a new model tranistion. could have been the last single cut of the line.

Is the serial number very clear? Can we see pics? Often times the stamped numbers are a little distorted and a 4 can look like a 9 or a 9 can look like a 7, etc. If you can read it for sure, that would be an odd number. If it is a little hard to read, take a picture and alter the color, hue etc a bunch of different ways. Many times a photo can be changed until the number is positively readable.

I will try to get a good photo of it tonight.....I have Photoshop, so if it needs altering, I can handle that. Pretty sure I'm reading it right though. Will post it when I get a chance...

The serial numbers were tapped in with a steel numbering set one at a time. If you say it is the number of a 6120 it is a mistake. This has happened before. Sometimes we caught it. This time I guess we didn't. Dan Duffy

Thanks for getting back to me Dan. No, not a 6120, but a 6109 Twist.

Here's a picture of the guitar as I received it. It's currently undergoing a lot of work....I'm mid way through stripping the varnish off that someone applied and have plugged all the holes that were drilled in it.
