I guess the title mostly says it all... have you any tips or mods that you would recommend for taming this hiss problem found on "Space Echos"?
It's possible to cut a bit of hiss selecting the "M" position on the "Output changeover"(as they call it) which is besides the output jack) but, well... sound is not as clear as on the "H" selection. Thank you for sharing your advice and experience on this topic.

The adjustable bias trap might need to be adjusted. Its an inductor on the board with a screwdriver slot on top. Be careful...they're brittle. Also, the input impedance is way too low for a guitar. You can add a JFET follower to the input jack and improve the tone immensely. It'll become clean and twangy instead of dull and mid-rangey. Plugging into a stock Space Echo instrument input is the same as using a 5K volume pot on your guitar.
Mr. Z, Is that a kit you offer, or does it require us sending you our RE-301 or 201 for service?

The last time I checked, the transistors were still available from Radio Shack. Everything can be mounted right on the jack. Anybody who can't figure out the drawing should take it to a good tech rather than asking lots of questions. In other words, it's self-explanatory to anyone qualified to do it.

Billy How often should you clean and demagnatize the heads? Could changing out the tape help as well? We'd clean and demag our Ampex reel to reel recorders every hundred hours or so. I know tape doesn't last forever. What's a realistic life expectancy?

Clean the heads frequently, and change the tape when it looks worn. Demagnetize everything in the tape path if you haven't already. You only need to do it once or twice a year. I use a magnetometer to check the transports.
Can somebody tell me how to add a link? I keep clicking on the icon that looks like a peanut and adding a web address, but it doesn't work. Are there instructions somewhere on this site?
Yeah, just put the url in the space that says "link" and if you want text to be displayed instead of the link, write it in the space that says "Text to display" and hit ok.
Of course, you could just copy/paste the link onto the regular text editor. it works just as well, look.
Billy, if you're adding a link you've got to put http:// before it or else it just links back to the GDP for some reason.
