Hey Zoom... question for you re: Setzer

Do you know what speakers Brian Setzer uses? Over the years, it's been "common knowledge" that Brian uses V30's, but I was reading an old interview where Brian says his guitar tech at that time- Billy Zoom- loaded his cab with "30 watt celestions"... now, those are either G12H30s, OR Brian's just assuming they are V30 because of the name Vintage 30.
just curious. Thanks man!

yeah, I know we know, I was just trying to verify from the source.

- I didn't load the cabinets. I just do the amps.
- As far as I know, all of Brian's cabinets have Vintage 30's.
- At the time, Vintage 30's were rated at 30 watts, which is why they were called 30's. The 60 watt rating is recent.

on that amp...any of the following inside? ie: allen b. carbon comp resistors, orange drops, and sprague electrolytics? maybe a few silver mica's in place of ceramic?
just thought we'd ask?

Which amp? Brian has 13 or 14 of those Blonde Bassmans, a couple of brown Concert amps, a little Valco and a little Harmony, a few Fender reverb units, and five Space Echos. He may have more, but that was what came into the shop before every album or tour. No caps or resistors were replaced unless they were bad. No Orange Drops were employed. Pots are stock. Filter caps are Illinois brand. Any bad resistores were replaced with modern metal film types. Everything was kept stock except for balancing the phase inverters carefully and adding grounded cords.

thanks for sharing, really cool to know. So the blonde bassmans are stock 'cept for the speakers.. hmmm.. do you tend to lean toward max plate voltages to the phillips 6L6WGBs. Mine seems to growl a bit better but eats the tubes up in 12months.
btw..Any modification to the RE-301's he uses?

BillyZoom
I don't understand the question. The Bassmans are stock. The plate voltage is that of a stock Bassman.

a bias voltage of -50VDC high side for more drive? when you say stock plate voltage for a bassman, do you mean a Plate voltage of 420? I'm not that technical yet so i'm asking, i dont even own an ocilloscope..just a Fluke DMM

BillyZoom
Uness you're into swapping transfirmers, plate voltage is what it is. Bias is set with a scope...whatever it takes to get rid of the crossover notch.

thanks BZ, going back to the 301..does setzer's have the jfet follower on the input? or was that just for the re-201?
