I'm crazy about the sound of those dynas pushed through the Cowboy amp. Beautiful sound.
A Vist to Zoom Studios - and a listen to the prototypes.

For the record, when I said Billy's studio was modest, I meant that he didn't buy into the typical "Your studio has to be THIS way to be cool" mentallity. He's got everything that you need for a great studio without having it look CEO business like with purple auralex foam on the walls and a 200 channel mixing board that an orchestra couldn't even use. I'm referring to P-Diddy's studio from memory. You don't need all of that extra garbage bull crap. No offense meant to Mr. Zoom in the least...

All you need is a good room, a plate reverb, and lots of compressors.

I agree Billy. I said that before somewhere that compressors are the least used and most important effect in any studio. You don't even "need" the reverb if you've got good compression on the tracks and apply it sparingly when needed. Some people overdo the compression, which can sound worse than no compression, but a properly compressed track will sound golden compared to uncompressed.
A lot of people buy the cool flashy effects first without taking into account managing your signals, especially at loud volumes. You have to tame the gorilla before you can even consider using the sparkly effects. Just my $.02

As a general rule, I never use more compression than Joe Meek did. Of course, there's always the odd exception.

Huh huh! THAT leaves it pretty open, doesn't it?
Did you try any of the Joe Meek brand compressors a few years ago?

Well, nothing like spending more than an hour to debug a Dell/MicroSoft/Apple/Software/Hardware/Interface/Driver Board/Quicktime/Media Player/Defaults issue.
And, Oh, yeah, my wife says she did me a favor Saturday morning "dusting" around the computer...
Nice job Billy on the various amps, nice job Proteus allowing everyone on the Gretsch Board to see and hear...

I was thinking of getting one of the new Leslie G27 or G37 rotating speaker/amp units once they hit the streets. Now I'm thinking I need a Little Kahuna instead. That has the "feel it in your guts" doppler shift that the true rotary units have, plus the reverb, plus I'm sure it's a heck of a lot lighter. And it's got the BZ-cool factor going for it as well
As my son used to say when he was a toddler; I want! I want!
Great gear Billy, and great review/reporting Proteus.

Thanks Proteus! Of them all, the last 2 did it for me. The tremelo almost has a Leslie quality to it, and the reverb is nice & warm.

Loved the sound of the little Kahuna as well. What nice, lush, reverb and tremolo sounds. That would make a surf players tongue hang out I'm sure.

Geez, for an admitted "everything guitar and amp freak" like me that's some great stuff. Can't thank you enough, Proteus (and Mr. Z) for giving us wee proteans a glimpse of some really cool and neat things!

Wow this is fantastic Id love to hear more from the little kahuna. All the amps sound great but i find im drawn toward the sounds i heard from the smaller amps, the 4 watt might not have quite enough headroom for my needs but that 18 watt is an amp i would seriously want to own especially with the little kahuna in front of it.

Do any of you guys know Jim Selvaggio? He sent me some Gretsch stuff, and I lost his contact info in the rush to get everything ready for the NAMM show. I'd like to thank him. He's on the gretschpages.
