Well now, there's a thing! Have you seen some of the Gibsons in there? Les Paul's personal stash.

3

Yep.

I've been DROOLING all morning!

Check out that Gibson upright!

Hmmm, have you seen page 359?

I know! 8-o

So I'm guessing those prices are starting bids?

6

I believe that the prices are selling estimates. So the $500-$700 tag is the expected sale price.

Of course in auctions those figures are usually way less than what the item actually sells for.

I think I might put in a bid or two on the Gretsch Upright :)

7

Damn, if that's the case, there's some good deals.

That upright is well worth that!

8

There are indeed some good deals if the items sell for the estimated prices. Unfortunately, a lot of the time they sell for far higher, especially if the items are sought after by collectors and bidding wars ensue.

Referencing another thread, "The Scream" painting was estimated to sell for $80m at Sotheby's, but it went for $120m.

No harm in throwing in a bid though...who knows, maybe the minimum bids are much lower and a bargain could be had.

Gretsch uprights were rebranded Kay basses.

And I don't care what jazz nazis say, Kay basses are AWESOME.

I came back from a trip and offsite gig and found a probably early-20th century Gibson Mando-Bass in the room. Needs some cleanup but it really moves the air in the room, a huge amount of bottom end. Haven't had time to look closely at it or take photos or recordings, but those will be coming.

Looks kind of like the one here:

Jeff, by all accounts, in his big old house! Amazing auction catalog btw, exciting and sad at the same time to be looking through Les Paul's accumulated possesions.
