I've still got to get it pinstriped, but it came out great: nice little short scale hollowbody bass! It's got a nice satin black, "ratrod" finish.

Thanks! Sorry for the quick (and not so great) pics. Actually the pic of the Gretsch bass is from ebay, and in my haste I realize it's not the model I worked with. I used a single pickup short scale Electromatic, not the long scale, dual pickup model shown here.

That's an awsome looking bass!! Great work. I can't even see where you plugged all them holes. What kind of guitar was the body from?

Thanks guys! The body is from a mid to late sixties Harmony Rocket guitar. I had to do some serious neck pocket routing to accomodate the Gretsch neck (scary stuff!). The nice thing about the Rocket Body is the fact that it's pretty stout - fairly thick ply (good for mounting the bridge the way I did), pre-existing soundpost, and no existing pickup openings to weaken the top. As far as sound. it sounds really good! The flatwounds are the ticket - if you back the tone off, it has a really nice "faux-upright" bass tone. I really like the simplicity of it. Actually the single pickup is quite punchy, and with the tone pot at it's max. it's not muddy at all.

Wow. I am always impressed, really impressed by guys like Setzer, yourself and others that know how to do the stuff you do with guitars. This bass is another such example. And it is really great looking!!! Wonderful too that you made it for your wife. Even one that came out looking half as good as this one would be appreciated I am sure, simply for the thought and intent.

Hey, I've got that top bass! Haven't seen too many of those. Wasn't the 2 pickup version regular 34" scale and the single pickup the short scale? Or does "short scale hollowbody bass" translate to regular scale solidbody bass?
Great work as well!
If you ever replace the tuners, I'd be interested in one of those or the set. The little rubber washer between the tuning key and the machine broke on one of mine, and I can't find an exact replacement. I found one that works, but has such an oversized outer diameter it's a bit of a sore thumb.

that is super cool, I have a buddy with a Harmony bass body H27 loaded with original DeArmonds and it needs a neck, this might be a good alt to finding an original neck.

For your wife, huh? Will you marry me?
Seriously, that turned out great. Awesome job. If it sounds even half as good as it looks, your wife should be one happy camper.

so the scale length was exactly the same? so that the neck intonates just right?
was that a bass or a guitar body?

Not too shabby, hb! Got a question, tho. Did you also make that duck decoy "swimming" in the background? Looks like a decoy, anyway. Please don't tell me it's the wife.

Wow - thank you again, guys. GearJunky, it was a guitar body in it's previous life. I routed the neck pocket wider and farther into the body (about 1/2"). Using measurements that I took from the Gretsch bass (before I disassembled it) I was able to layout the bridge location. So yes, the intonation is right on the money. The next step is the pinstriping - since it's her (my wife's) bass I have to bow to her wishes: she just wants to go with one color - white. If it was mine I'd go with white and red - ah well, maybe if I show her some pics of other people's work I can change her mind. As far as building more of these, there's one obstacle: finding Harmony Rocket bodies! I really dig Harmony Rockets, so I'd never want to defile a nice one - just the "basket case" ones.
(Tux: sorry man, I didn't make the duck decoy, that pic is from someone else's Ebay auction!)

Nice job. I was going to ask about the neck routing, but you already answered that.
Show her some cool pics of flat black bikes (or cars) with stripes. It may change her mind on the color choices. Just white may be cool as well though.
