Why doesn't gretsch have a budget bass model?
I think they should make an electro corvette bass. The old Synchros were just too unremarkable to stand out. If not a corvette, then a pro-jet bass in the sparkle finishes. I think it's really the only thing missing from the gretsch line at the moment.
Don't they have something that sells for $229 (approx) at GC? I've seen them.
You're tight Jeff here it is. It's not on the website, and I've never seen one before. I dunno I'd still like a sparkle Pro Jet bass, and a corvette bass.
I still want a GK300 Bass. Might have to settle for the guitar version. Which would also be cool.

Shiza - short scale. I would buy it in a HEARTBEAT if it had a real neck.
No sir, can't do it. Can't play short scale. You see, I'm a REAL man. Short scale are for women (although the chick from Talking Heads feels the same way I do, from an old interview I read) and men with disabilities.

And my one ex insisted on always playing long scale, but then she was more than 6 feet tall, so it suited her better anyway, I guess.

Short or long doesn't matter too much to me. I have a long scale Jazz Bass, but I've played quite a few short scales which I didn't mind at all. If I had the option of the two, I'd go long though.
I'd really like an Epi FIrebird guitar, not bass, with a shortened neck. For me its just about 3 inches too long to play comfortably, but I'm a smaller guy. Even my friend who is 6'2" says its a bit too big for him, but I guess it may be he's used to playing other necks.
I can deal with either scale. I play keyboards and guitar primarily, but I dabble in bass as well. What gets me is trying to fit my fingers on my mandolin.
I like the sound on Hofners and old Kay basses, that hollow sound. For me, I like the bass to have a tuba sound.
What I don't like is a bass heavier than a LP.

Being a guitar player for the most part at this point, I have no interest in dealing with long scale stretches anymore. Did it for years. Plus, I'm with cielski, most short scale basses are tubby sounding, unique and lightweight, all qualities I appreciate. For ME, a short scale bass flatwound stings is my favorite electric tone now. But I do hear they cause shrinkage and enlarged male breast tissue. So beware!
Irregardless of scale, I've always thought of the Fender Precision and Jazz as being male and female counterparts... i.e., one is aggressive and basic, the other is elegant and nuanced.
As the Chinese say, Woman is the balance of Man and vice versa. As a... bubbling crockpot of testosterone, the J is Yin to my Yang - No doubt Shosti's P acts in the same way.
Most short scale basses ARE tubby sounding. Tubby can be good. Except for the Thunderjet, Broadkaster and a few other Gretsch basses. Use Pyramid flats and you get a whole new world of bass with tone...and edge. A Thunderjet has the best weight and balance of any mahogany bass I've seen. Chambering definately helps both tone and weight.
Well, I see a lot of you guys still have some hang ups over "size." Dignan and DCbass are correct. A 30" scale about is about achieving a different tone than you can get from a 34" bass.
Have any of you tried the new low cost ($350) Hofner? Looks the same as the $2000 version, so, I suspect it's an import/import (Asia to Germany to US). But, for the same money as knock off imports, it is a Hofner.
Do you carry it high, ala Bill Wyman in an almost vertical stance like a double bass, or, do you carry it at knee level?
