Can you play a bass through the Bassman amp or is it strictly a guitar amp? I know you should use bass speakers w/guitar amps, but this amp was "designed" for bass.

I practice through my 62 Bassman all the time. It has a nice bass sound.
Just no volume. And if you slap and pop, there's no tweeter, so it sounds like caca.
The newer Bassman 100 is a great bass amp. It's almost like they were going after the Ampeg SVT sound at a lower volume level (130 watts vs. 300 watts).

Slapping and popping sucks, though. If I wanted my bass to sound like it was falling down the stairs.. I'd throw it down the stairs!

One of the bassists I played with back in high school played a Hofner through a blackface Bassman with 2 cabinets (each 2x12"). It sounded great and had plenty of volume for school dances and clubs. Nowadays any bigger venue would run the bass through the P.A., so while it's less powerful than most modern bass amps, I don't see why you couldn't use it onstage.

Parabar - no direct out (which is the best way to run through the PA - and having an attenuated direct out is even better).

Thanks for the input! I was thinking of having a Bassman 410 as a "bass option" in my home studio (and an excellent guitar amp as well).
