I found a decent deal on an Engelhardt Concert Model cello. Is this the same thing as an upright or is there a difference? I was under the impression the terms are interchangeable. It is 4/4 which seems like it may be too big but I figured it's worth a shot. Also, for a low end upright, is Engelhardt worth a hoot? I've decided to go low end despite what everyone says since I don't feel like spending 2k or more on something I don't like. I'm looking in the $500-$600 range and I'll work my way up from there.
A few bass questions...

After some research, there is a difference. It's a shame too because you can get one cheaper.
I got it though! I'll be the first slap cellist and start a revolution!

Yeah...There are alot of differences. Are you going to try to play it as if it was a bass, or some strange hybrid creature? That could be interesting...

I am going to do it! I've decided to play it like a slap bass -AND- with my right foot, use a bow and play it like a traditional Cello. I will be the hottest thing to ever happen to Rockabilly, bigger than Elvis.
On a serious note, anyone used an Engelhardt bass? I'm trying to find something in the $500-$600 range but that is proving to be very hard. I have found a couple in that range but they total crap. I just want to make sure something like the Swingmaster is less crappy. I am well aware it is a low end bass. That's what I am in the market for.

I haven't heard of Engelhardt, and anyway, with any instrument it needs to be thoroghly tried to tell if it's good. Pretty much ANYTHING you buy in the $500-$600 range will be a shitheap. My sister's cello is somewhere in that range and it's best purpose would be to be used as firewood, plus it's only a 3/4 size. If you're willing to sink that low, that one's for sale.

Yeah, I'm looking at the Engelhardt upright basses, not Cellos. Also, I am considering buying one new for about $1k. I am hoping to find a steal on a used one within my price range but if I have to go for something new, I will. I'm really looking for something that is not great but not God-awful. Something we can learn on and get something nice later (King Doublebass, vintage Kay).

Oh yeah, I did see some on Ebay at ridiculously cheap prices. I know when something sounds to good to be true, it is, but I'm curious:
My thing is, if I buy this thing and it's the most horrible thing ever, I should still be able to find someone that would buy it for a couple hundred less than what I paid. If I bought the Engelhardt or another "cheaper" model and don't like playing it or don't like the way it sounds, I'll be out more money.

It might be worth trying, but I wouldn't risk it. A reasonable student aimed make such as Stirling will set you back around $2500 (Aussie) new. Look around and try some out, and beware of people who don't know what they're talking about trying to convince you on things.

Englehardts are the old Kay models (M-1 ? ) made in Indiana, USA, if I'm not wrong.
