Whats with the 4-string 'bass' Gretsch electrics? You know the ones I mean, the oldschool Jets with 4 strings instead of 6. were these just a bad idea or did they have some purpose?

If you're talking about the Spectrasonics, they seem pretty cool. 33" scale, which isn't quite Long scale, but definitely not the 30" short scale.
TV Jones Pickups, black/white styling, Sperzel (non locking) tuners. Haven't played one.
If you're looking for cool looks, huge tone, and HUGE presence, get a G6072. Hollowbody, basically the exact same bass as the new While Falcon Bass, without TV Jones (in this case totally not necessary), Sperzels (again, non locking so overkill).
Same neck and body though, I do believe.
At a very modest price. They're discontinued but several places still have 'em floating, and I believe the sponsors may still be able to order them.

You mean these? I bought this at GC in about 2003, I don't know much about it but it is a pre FMIC full scale with nondescript humbuckers. There is a much more popular version, very similar in looks but it is a short scale, single pickup model with black finish on the back of the neck (mine is natural).

One more for good measure...
And I forgot to include the most important info of all. It plays great, the workmanship is better than most, and its held up for about 4 years now. Never knew a plywood body could sound so good! It has served me well.

I purchased a G6072 last week. Played it at Friday nights gig. WOW! Light weight, plays great, and tone forever. SRP is steep but you can find bargains out there. I recomend them.

Forgot to add a pic. BTW, I've found a solution to neck dive too. Added a Gretsch strap button to the underside of the neck heel. It shifts the bass right and the neck stays up by itself. I'm traveling now but will provide pics if anyone is interested. In the meantime,a borrowed pic.

Until I learn how to slap my King, my G6072 is the main bass I play with the band at rehearsals, gigs will be the same.
