Whats with the 4-string 'bass' Gretsch electrics? You know the ones I mean, the oldschool Jets with 4 strings instead of 6. were these just a bad idea or did they have some purpose?

Thats the one! Sorry about the double post BTW. So what was the point of these tenor guitars? Whats style of music were they aimed at, and did they have standard tuning? They seem like faurly interesting guitars but "limited use" comes to mind when I see them.

The tenor guitar is an odd duck that came into limited vogue as tastes in rhythm shifted from the banjo to the guitar. They were tuned every which way...including like a banjo. The idea was that it would be easier for a tenor banjo player to quickly adapt to a tenor guitar.

Tim Brennan makes a four string Rythm guitar...
Vibratone PT4 : This is the ultimate 4 string rhythm guitar. Made as simple as a guitar gets for playing huge power chords with no fuss. Tune to open or E A D G. Comes with hand made 4 string humbucker and one/off switch. Ultra thin neck for fast rhythm work.

I doubt it... I have a lot of respect for Tim's work, but this one's less than a great idea.
