Questions (and answers) about the site redesign

I'm sure I'll be adding more, but these are the ones I KNOW I've answered two or three times.
I do NOT want this thread littered with 30 pages of the usual banter and silliness, and questions about everybody's personal edge case or desired pony.
I just want to compile the questions that are widespread.
And if you post a question in this thread that is already answered elsewhere in it, I will throw rocks and spoons in your general direction.
So....
If you are on IE6 or IE7
You're hosed. IE6 and IE7 are no longer supported. Get a newer browser, if you can. We recommend Chrome, Safari or Firefox. If you can't upgrade your browser, try Chrome Frame.
If you are on IE8
You need to upgrade, too. But if you can't, then click the compatibility view button. It's the one directly left of the refresh/reload button, and it looks like a torn sheet of paper. Note that IE8 will never look or perform as well as a good browser. IE8 can't do the things a modern browser can do, is nearing the end of it's life cycle, and frankly no longer has enough users to justify more than the most rudimentary bug fixes. If you can upgrade, you should. If you can't, you should try Chrome Frame.
What the heck is Chrome Frame?
Chrome Frame is an amazing little plug-in for Internet Explorer that Google released. It takes your crusty old browser and makes it think it's fresh and new again. Seriously, you want to Get Chrome Frame.
I did that and it's still jacked up.
Clear your cache and temporary files.
Avatars are all over the place and text is too big and I can't scroll the menu and GAAHHHHH!
See "If you are on IE8"
Why am I missing stuff in "my recent topics"?
See here: http://gretschpages.com/for...
I don't like the dark
Change it. It's in the menu, toward the bottom.
Where did edit and quote go?
Click the down arrow directly right of reply.
Why can't I edit and quote?
-
Because you didn't read "Where did edit and quote go" directly above.
-
Because you're on a crappy browser and didn't read about compatibility view above.
My menu stays open all the time
If you are on IE8, it will. IE8 is too dumb to handle it correctly. See "If you are on IE8".
Otherwise, it's a function of window size. If there's enough room, it goes ahead and opens. If not, it closes up.
What menu? What are you talking about?
Look up top, by the logo, for the button.
Why can't I post video?
Video was never supported. Never. And that fact was made clear many times. The ability to post video was, frankly, a bug. The ability to attach video will happen when I think it can be done reliably. Given the current to-do list, don't hold your breath.
Why won't my phone work?
There is a known problem with some versions of Android. We're working on it. Android is very difficult to debug, as it seems no two Android devices work the same way.
Didn't you test this thing?
Um, yeah. Over about half a year. On Macs and Windows and every mobile device I could get my hands on, across every possible browser. There was also four months of public beta testing you could have been a part of.

Because you didn't read "Where did edit and quote go" directly above.

It should be "light" by default....pleeeease

Bax, is there any way to edit the quoted portion from someone's prior post? Or do we have to simply quote the entire post?

What do you care what the default is? Set it the way you like it and don't worry about it.

Yes. Put a > before the text you want to quote, like you'd see in an email.
> This is some text.
becomes
This is some text.

Well, perhaps I am missing a step here...
I don't see the ability to insert a " > " anywhere because the quoted text does not show up in the posting box where I can type. Am i supposed to select a portion of the text with my cursor, copy it to the clipboard, and then insert it into the posting box?

Maybe it is just my browser, but, when I use the "back" button on my browser, it doesn't take me back to the spot where I was before I navigated onto the page that I am now leaving, as it used to do. Instead, it takes me back up to the top of the page. This makes for a lot of scrolling, particularly on a mobile device.
And another one...it might be helpful for mobile users to see a link that they have tapped on take on a different color or something to let them know that the device has received the instruction or command.

If that's what you want to do, yes.

No way to insert a ">" on specific lines, as the quoted text does not appear in the "edit" box at all.
WAIT! I've got it! you must edit quotes after the fact... naw, that don't work either-- quoted text still doesn't appear... as a matter of fact, if I edit one of my posts which contains quoted material, the quote disappears when I save my edited post.
On this specific post, I've quoted Ric12's post #9 above. It appeared the first time I posted, but after editing this post it doesn't appear at all. However, If I re-enter edit mode, the entire quote appears ABOVE (outside) the edit box, yet disappears when I finalize the edit.

This isn't hard.
If you want to quote a post, click quote.
If you just want to refer to a particular sentence or passage, you can copy and paste that package with a > before it. It will become a quote. Just like in an email.
Again, I'm not interested in edge cases and feature requests, and don't want this to turn into a 50 page thread full of them. Just trying to answer the most common questions in one easily findable -- and readable -- place.

Sorry 'bout that. I thought that you were looking to consolidate all questions and comments about the new site design here rather than having the strewn about the place in multiple threads.
I get the quote feature now. Unfortunately, however, it doesn't give any attribution for the quote, which helps to keep things in context. Any way to address that?

Groovy.

Oh God, how do I put a video up? I can edit in Imovie and save as a quicktime file but can't find any ifo anywhere as to how this is loaded up. Loading images was always hit and miss for me, sometimes it worked but I ended up giving up as it seemed to much of a brain ache.
Any clues about pics and video uploading? New forum does look groovy though

Vince, the movies that do get posted around here are hosted elsewhere, usually on Youtube and then embedded. For uploading pics from the hard drive, just look above the text box and click on the camera icon with the upward facing arrow. You should see some text and a button under the text box to allow you to browse for the picture to upload. It will say: Upload your image: Choose File. Navigate to the file you want, select it and then click "Add post"

On my iphone 4s I cannot scroll down in the menu. It only scrolls the forum screen in the background?? I'm sure it's operator error on my part. Anybody else have this problem? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

Hi Fi, there's a quirk of IOS5 scrolling. Some times when the main content area is somewhat scrolled down, it thinks that's all you want to do, so it then locks the other (menu) area. The solution is to jump back up to the top (click the top header bar and it'll fly back up there) and then it will all scroll normally.
Mobile scrolling in general is a very weird business. Things that are trivial on the desktop are big deals on mobile. Be glad you don't have an older iphone. You don't want to know the hoops I jumped through to get it working there. And there are still problems on some android phones.

I knew it was operator error by me! I figured it out. To scroll through the menu you have to use two fingers at the same time.....

I'm pretty sure that Django doesn't officially support Youtube embedding-- If I recall correctly, we discovered by happy accident that we could actually do it.
However, I don't think we're as lucky with the current configuration. Maybe Bax can customize a script somewhere down the road-- when he has time.
For now, posting a URL link will suffice.

Hhhmmm, tried adding using the choose file button but nothing happens. Haven't ever tried the youtube route though....but it all seems a bit complicated for an old dog like me. Think I'll stick to word messages but I would like to upload images and film one day. Thanks for the help though

Baxter, is there a way to explain in pure and simple terms about how to upload images and films? Sorry to be the dunce around here, I see other folk doing it fine

To answer your question about video, There is currently no way to upload video. And since the new design/format, there is no more embedding video. AKA no videos will be in threads. You can only paste a link from here on out. Video was never intentionally supported.

Bax- I am on IE9 (9.0.4, to be a little more exact), and I've cleared out my cache and cookies yet I am still having issues with this. In discussions, I have folks' avatars across the text (not at first, but about a second after the page loads, the icons migrate over anc obscure the writing). Thots?

My thoughts are in the first post. Hint: compatibility mode.
The more chatter added to this thread, the harder it is for people to find the answers.
