Just reminding everyone of the ability to vote up individual POSTS. It's right there at the bottom of each post, along with the "!" to report a post as being useless or obnoxious.
I use both buttons frequently. I find that I want to vote up a member, but when I click to vote him up, his total doesn't increase. That means I've voted him up before, and we can each just vote each other up once.
BUT ... I can reward and show my appreciation for his post by voting IT up. And so I do.
Moreover, sometimes a guy who often just pisses me off says something I really like, or says something I don't like exceptionally well, or provides useful information or a unique perspective. I like to recognize such posts.
I don't understand why we don't use this tool more often. It's a better way for us to tell each other what we like about our contributions, as it's more specific.
Unless someone tells me (and please don't), I can't tell if I've been voted up for attempts at humor, posting pics, posting sound samples, being really good-looking, or my politics.
See what I mean? Voting up the POST instead of the member might make more meaningful seals of approval.
And remember, when a post frosts your cornflakes, hit the "!". Enough of us do that, and it collapses.
And something else - what happens to those extra attempts to vote up someone we've already voted up? Do they have ANY value? Like if a guy gets 10 extra revotes or something, does he get another gold star?
Interesting..if something were to "Frost My Cornflakes" I'd think that was a very positive thing..I mean whats the best way to improve anything?.....lace it with sugar!
Under the guy's avatar over to the left of the post, J-H. There's a number there with a little arry. You click the arry, then it turns into a checkmark to confirm the clickage.
I think the vote up system just serves to alienate tha casual board poster who feels insignificant because of his "poor score". If your aim is to turn the GDP into mutual congratulation society of Good ol' boys, than that is the way to do it. Just my opinion.
There's been quite a few new folks who quickly racked up an impressive number of votes. Personally, I'm more concerned about some very knowledgable old-timers who seem to get overlooked for whatever reason.
Agreed - I've been on too many boards where the quantity of posts seems to be much higher than the quality of the posts. One thing I really like about the system here is that you don't move up based on number of posts, but on the quality of your contributions. I've got a low score (zero right now), but in no way do I feel alienated - I just chalk it up to being new here.
I've been pretty generous with my votes so far, because I've found some really good info here that I haven't found anywhere else.
There was also a suggestion awhile ago to do something like votes/posts to come up with a final score, since people who tend to post a lot tend to rack up more votes, and that would level it out a bit more. I may do that, when I get a chance.
I frankly don't get the voting system. I've been a member on these pages through at least three different versions of the GDP--probably for about five or six years, and I remember fondly the days of Zak and Cadillac Green. Entertaining stuff. I even have a song on the first GDP CD. Yet, when I look at my "votes," I'm rated at five (or something like that). Granted I post rarely, but I like to think that I have something to actually say when I do. I don't spend a lot of time making virtual small talk... if that makes me a less valuable member of the GDP, I guess that's OK. I just don't see the point of "rating members." It seems to to serve no real purpose...

Three cheers for you and a vote up-
I don't post many times either but have been
coming around less and less as the actual posts referring to the Great Gretsch sound appears to be dropping off- No offence but I want to read about Gretsch guitars-
I have been a member through many different
versions(5-6 years+) and don't get the vote up business- Seems to me the up votes are more for quantity of non Gretsch subjects then for quality-My two cents-

Or is it just ignored?
Enquiring minds want to know, that's all.
Alright, already...I voted this post up. And I'll tell you why.
I missed that day in school when we talked about the "vote up this post" button. I just wanted to see how it worked. Cool.
Actually, this post deserves a vote up, if for nothing else than the fabulous phrase, "Frosts your cornflakes".
Hey Pro...I used the "!" on your post just to see what happened.
Ah ha! It brought it down one!
BTW,I have in the past used the vote up post function...so this is old news to me. Thanks thou for getting it out there for Deed and others.
"Mark as of no value or spam" Eeow, that smarts.
Proto I voted you up one to make up for the -1 Setzer gave you for fun.
And if I have ever accidentally voted anyone down on a post I apologize, I'm a clutz
...that would be klutz, with a "k". But, a charming and sincere klutz, nonetheless.
Interesting..if something were to "Frost My Cornflakes" I'd think that was a very positive thing..I mean whats the best way to improve anything?.....lace it with sugar!
Yeah, but sugar hurts my teeth.
You can always wash it off with some Coke.
I thought voting up the comments added to the member count. If that's not the case, how does one vote members up?

It just worked on yours.
Thanks Proteus. Helpful as always.
See Deed, I'm such a klutz I hit the c rather than the K.
Yup, I definitely think voting posts up has a lot of value, and is generally underutilized.
As for extra votes, they're just ignored.
Well ... Hmm ???
Thanks for the info proteus

If the casual poster is worried about his "poor score," he should probably find a more constructive use of his time.
That said, I tallied a banana for your post, mustang. :highfivewhilewekickbacksomecoldones:

That's the idea, Bob.

Dig, I congratulate you on that post. "Tallied a banana"...very good.

Reverb11, +1 for frankness and honesty!
