Wood & Wire Partial Binding Replacement

Both sides of the wide vertical pieces were very brittle.
Also brittle near the master volume knob.
The rotted binding is carefully removed with a very sharp chisel.
All the affected binding removed.

Attaching the binding one layer at a time.
The first layer is glued then all the additional layers are laminated with acetone.
Attaching the vertical piece.

the binding has been shaped and scraped.
Ready for some tinted clear on the binding.

It’s interesting that the rot is isolated in a few areas. The challenge is sourcing or laminating the binding to match perfectly.

  1. It’s difficult to replace sections of binding for a couple reasons so if you do this or have it done for you anticipate the challenge. The binding size and thickness that was used in the factory can’t be bought today so you have to be creative with the layup. Gretsch was inconsistent on how they shaped the binding edge so it’s imperative to match what’s there and once that’s done you need to add some color. Sometimes you need to walk away for a day or two because you really need to be in the right place to find the answers.
